I had that same feeling when I stepped up to the 5D2. I still kinda miss the dreamy look of those files with a wide open prime lens. But I have had that same feeling with Sony...the R2, the a9 and now the A1. But the A1 is on another level.

The color is probably one of the biggest things, the color looks so good, I don't find myself working the WB and tint as much. And of course, the resolution. This one is from my last trip, and will be the subject of the next Episode that will go up tomorrow. I made 4 little detail shots out of it in the video, and cropped them all to 16:9...only to find out that each of them was still over the 4k resolution!

The last time a camera made me say wow was when I first got delivery of the Canon 5D Mark II. This past weekend the Sony A1 made me say wow. The files and images and shutter speed. Man. Even my wife said wow. Just really happy I stuck with my gut and went right to the top with the A1.

just the color alone makes the upgrade a good one.

next, sony needs to work on ergonomics and design. the camera is still not pretty to look at heheh
yes its more comfy now with the deeper grip, but it still doesnt feel great. just a small nit picky though, ive been fine with the original a7.

The ergonomics are getting better. I don't give a flip about the looks, just what it can do. The new menu is a laughing maze of confusion...just so many settings. I had to dig to find the cleaning mode, and...by default it has a blackout after the first frame when shooting controls, you gotta dig to find the setting to turn that off. I don't think they have made forward progress on the menus.

This is a bit of a “help me choose” post to try and help me stop going round in circles and make a decision. Narrowed my MacBook Pro choices down to the following -

1 - 14” M1 Pro 10 core cpu 16 core gpu (top spec M1 pro option) + 32 gb ram and 2 TB ssd

2 - 14” M1 Max 10 core cpu 32 core gpu (top spec M1 max option) + 32 gb ram and 1 TB ssd

So basically bigger SSD or more gpu cores. Both are exactly the same price.

Anyone in the know able to help steer me one way or another?

Last weekend I took delivery of the 14" M1 Pro 10 core cpu 16 core gpu with 16gb ram and 1 TB ssd. On 10/20 I initially preordered the M1 Max with 24 gpu, 32 gb ram and 2 TB, but after checking out so many reviews and comparisons, I finally decided that the Pro should be more than adequate for my needs. As much as I would love to get into video in the future, my main passion is still editing photos in LR and PS. Even if I do get into editing videos, I don't think I'll get to a point of needing that much power but still an incredible upgrade to my 2012 iMac and 2009 Macbook Pro. It also helped that my preorder was taking forever and the one I ordered was on sale for $2399 ($100 off) and in stock at B&H.

Having said that, I do wish B&H had the 2TB SSD option at the time of my purchase. If it were me and not in a rush, I would probably go for option 1 for that extra SSD space. I'm trying to figure out a plan for myself to work around having only 1TB SSD... But for now, I'm really enjoying this new machine. So sexy and fast.

Thanks for the in depth response! Think I’m going with option 1 :-)

I will say with the A1 the camera feels even beefier than the A7R4. I thought it was me until I looked at body comparisons and it is ever so slightly bigger and heavier. I think that extra bit helps with the ergonomics as well.

Agreed on all your points. The only camera I miss the look of is the original A7S. Wide open large aperture lenses on that specific 12 mp sensor, to me, produces the most beautiful digital grain I have ever seen. It rivals the D3S files I loved so much. I’m waiting for the OG Sony A7S used prices to eventually fall close to $500 so I can pick one up again.

Conversely I said wow when I briefly stepped back to canon 5Dm3 in between my a7r and a7rii as I had forgot how big it was :-P quickly realised the mistake I had made, haven’t looked back since

Lmfao I had this same feeling when I was at B&H last week and went around picking up the old 5D bodies they have on display lol

As others have said option 1 is stellar if you will only dable in video.

If anyone feels up to it...

And on another note...I found out about an LE "Masterclass" that was on YT today, had to reserve a spot to watch, being a huge LE fan I did. I was so disappointed. I am amazed at the people who are considered masters of photography, have Major Brand backing, some decent work in their portfolio...yet they are terrible presenters. Anyway...not that I feel like I can do a great job, but I am pretty sure I could do better than what I watched for 40 minutes today.
