Just tried that and still color. What version of Denoise and do you see the Lens Corrections module in the Denoise preferences? My support ran out on Oct 5ht but it shows 3.3.4 is the latest. I'm waiting for the next upgrade before purchasing support

My misunderstanding, I use an older version of LR, it has color which gives as shot, auto, daylight etc etc. That's what I thought you were referring to.. Denoise is 3.3.4 There is no Lens Corrections box to check on or off in my version. I am using windows, maybe its there for apple users. You can always do lens correction once it comes back to LR as a DNG

I’m at LrC 11.01. That is probably it. I submitted a ticket with Topaz.

For all edits: PL5 NR(always Deep Prime because it is the best) and DXO's optical corrections(again always the best), then back to PL5 for further tweaking(because I prefer it to other processors. This one was stitched in AP.

This one I used AP to expand the canvass as I thought the original was a bit claustrophobic.

This one I used Luminar AI to replace the sky.

A.
1. SNS-HDR in softly,softly mode!
2. PS > use Crop to remove some foreground and extend sky upwards > Content Aware to fill blank area at top of image save as TF and also resize and save as sharpened JPEG

B.
Starting with the TIF saved in A, replace sky in Luminar AI. I deliberately chose a fairly dark sky to bring the eye down to the main scene.

Sorry everyone. I'll stop now as the NR discussion doesn't belong here.

I, personally, don't mind the discussion here, especially since there doesn't seem to be a suitable thread that has been active in recent years (please point if there is one). Have learned a lot myself. And the Rules for this thread do say -

"The purpose of this game is to be creative and learn new editing techniques. You must give some insight into exactly how you went about editing the image. ... Comments and/or questions regarding the edits are encouraged."

- so some leeway for technical matters. Thanks all.

Thanks. I suppose the RAW, post processing forum but it did come up here. I did learn that video I posted on how to drop RAW into DeNoise works for Sony files but not Canon. I guess Topaz still has to figure that one out. Too bad. After applying NR to a RAW file and then having access to the Adobe and Canon camera profiles would be a real treat.

Despite me not being overly thrilled with the DXO the company I decided to get PureRaw. Half price is tough to turn down. It does something that Topaz DeNoise can't do with CR3 files - yet. Provide a DNG that can open Adobe and Canon colour profiles. Auto worked good with Adobe Color and DXO's DNG file.

Topaz support got back to me and verified they aren't there yet with RR3 files. Topaz is 3.3.4 but I couldn't get to work. I thought maybe if I paid for the upgrade there would be something else but there wasn't. I requested refund and got it in about 5 minutes. I'll wait for the next upgrade and see. IMO Topaz is far better at customer service.

Think it's time to name the lead for next week. All very pleasing treatments of the scenes. Allso appreciated the editing software info and applied examples.
Both rrblint/Mark and Stiga/Martin did nice sky replacements on the multi-boat scene. Mark, to me, Luminar AI sure took the cake on the sky replacement.

Tough, but the Champ this round is rrblint, for the treatments of all three subject scenes collectively.

Put us to work again, please, Mark!

Before and After - The Weekly Editing Challenge
...now compiled into a single, easy to locate thread, that can be added to your subscribe/follow list!

Rules are simple:

  • Download the image file from the current week

  • Contestants will have 7 days to edit the image and post their edited version to the thread (as many entries as you like)

  • The owner of the original image will choose a winner

  • The winner will copy & paste this post and include a new downloadable image link

  • The new image must be unedited / SOOC (straight our of camera), full-resolution, and in a RAW format, ie. CR2, DNG, TIF, etc

  • (Dropbox works well for uploading and linking these large files)

The purpose of this game is to be creative and learn new editing techniques. You must give some insight into exactly how you went about editing the image. For example, increased shadows sliders, reduced highlights, local sharpening, white balance adjustment, specific filters used, tone curve adjustments, etc. Comments and/or questions regarding the edits are encouraged.

Here are a few RAWs from Martin's free website. I tried to pick files that hold some interest, while containing considerable room for improvement.

HERE (external link) is the link to the Zip file.

SOOC: Here's two of the five files that I chose:

I, personally, don't mind the discussion here, especially since there doesn't seem to be a suitable thread that has been active in recent years (please point if there is one). Have learned a lot myself.

If the suitable threads are inactive, it's because the 50+ replies evaluating and testing various pieces of software were posted here rather than in one of those threads. You can make the appropriate thread or forum active simply by using if for these exchanges.

And the Rules for this thread do say - "The purpose of this game is to be creative and learn new editing techniques. You must give some insight into exactly how you went about editing the image. ... Comments and/or questions regarding the edits are encouraged." - so some leeway for technical matters. Thanks all.

"The image" refers to whatever image you edited and submitted to the contest. Details about how you went about editing are appropriate and most welcome, with some leeway for technical matters related to that editing.

When we have more than 50 posts that compare software using images that were uploaded for that purpose, the thread has clearly ceased to be about Before and After - The Weekly Editing Challenge.

I have no objection whatsoever to you guys exchanging views on these topics until the cows come home -- if you do it in a thread or forum intended for that purpose. This thread isn't intended for software tests and reviews.

Look, I'm not trying to be snarky, nor am I appointing myself deputy moderator, but the following technical comments (and it's just a small sample of what was posted) had nothing to do with techniques that were used to edit the challenge images. But if everyone agrees that these exchanges are appropriate and sufficiently relevant to the specific editing challenge, please tell me in your replies. If the majority so rules, I will quietly bow out. [Footnote and mini rant: It's a shame a moderator hasn't already settled this. If I were a moderator, I would have asked those interested in software testing to please do it in an appropriate thread or forum ... not here.]

"Thin clean hair lines are my preference which I don’t see with the DXO file on my 5K screen. Again this is just what I like. Nothing wrong with either software. I’m also not a fan of DXO the company."

"Joe (Bianchi) has kindly uploaded a noisy image for me to work on and do some comparisons."

"These crops are from your images. DeepPRIME is on the left. DeepPRIME's significantly greater amount of fine detail in the noise is pretty obvious. The Denoise version is softer and loses that detail. It is not just a matter of contrast. Most of the fine detail is simply missing from the denoise version. You may prefer that version, and that's fine. As I said Denoise is an excellent product."

"The default setting in Topaz also provides sharpening which DeePRIME by itself does not. What you are missing in both Topaz versions is fine detail, especially the second one which has the beginnings of that smooth plastic look of over applied noise reduction. It is unfortunate you do not like the interface. If you are both used to and comfortable with a different UI paradigm, that is understandable."

"I don't see Topaz as being crisper, but if you prefer its rendition that is all that matters."

"Yes sometimes Topaz can create a those artifacts. Interesting. DeepPrime has noise but a shows more detail than Light Sharpen that has no noise."

"Yes, detail retention is one of the areas in which DeepPRIME excels. We beta tested it for 8 months during which those parameters were continually refined."

"Has anyone seen this. I just found it today. In LrC I typically right click and select Edit In DeNoise. You have to select either TIFF, PSD or Jpeg. If you drag the file directly into DeNoise it opens as a RAW file."

"On the matter of the auto-cropping Topaz Ai when invoked as a plug-in: I received an update to Topaz Sharpen a couple of days ago and the cropping phenomenon seems to have gone away, coming from Aurora HDR. No cropping."

"Haven't researched DXO products, can Deep Prime be bought as a standalone plugin for PS, or does it come in DXO PhotoLab.. I'd like to take a trial test ride. I'll be glad to supply you with a low light high Iso 12,800 image, and run it through both Topaz Denoise AI & DeepPRIME"
