I'm going to call this a Sharp-shinned Hawk, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone thought Cooper's.
Hi Steve...As far as I'm concerned, you can call it whatever you want. I'm going to call it superb!

I took scores of pics of females and they all have what seems to me to be a strange cast. The shot was taken at about -10°F, on a brilliant sunlit day in countrysde layered with 1-2 ft of snow. Similarly, pictures I took of Blue Jays in the same conditions rendered some of the most striking blues I've seen on jays. I can't imagine what -10F feels like. Where I live if the temp drops below 20C (68F), which is only on a few nights in June/July, everyone reckons it's freezing. It looks like the cold does wonders for the quality of light though. Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

I was in northern Minnesota, just a short distance from Canada, so I could photograph boreal species. I learned immediately that breathing as one looked through a viewfinder was a no-no. I'd come across a Hawk Owl perched in a tree, jumped our of the car and set up the camera on a tripod. I exhaled as I was trying to acquire focus and condensation instantly fogged viewfinder and screen (it was -18°F) . It seemed it took forever to get enough clarity to shoot. I absolutely agree the quality of light in dry, crystal clear air is amazing, even if your fingers feel like frozen fish sticks when done.

Could be either. They're very difficult to tell them apart when just perched. Did you see him flying? If so, any specific observations? Time waits for no one!
