On the website of the rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, is a ultra high resolution photo of the Nachtwacht, painted by Rembrandt. It is 717 gigapixels, and one can even see the cracks in the paint.

Thank you for posting this. It reminds me that Rembrandt truly was one of the greatest artists... when I look at it closely, there is such expressiveness in the eyes of every single person in that image, despite the seeming looseness of the actual technique. It reminds me that sharpness is not the be-all of good art, whether photography or otherwise.

I was privileged to see a small Rembrandt of an old man in Kingston, Ontario many years ago - there were many similar-era paintings in the museum, but as small as it was, his work almost glowed. He truly was exceptional.

If my math is correct, a full-res 300ppi print would span from California to New York.....roughly 10 times

And the 1:1 square print would cover approx 24million ACRES

Edit: my math is not correct lol

My math:

  • Sqrt of 717,000,000,000 pixels = 846,759 pixels per side.
  • 846759/300ppi = 2822" per side = 235' per side of composite image
  • 300ppi means each pixel resolves 0.0033",

We visited the Rijksmuseum in 2019 when they had a large glass room built in front of the painting so visitors could see the setup as the camera did the imaging. Pretty cool.

That would be interesting to see how they did it.

That’s easy to accomplish with a gigapan setup and a long lens. Instead of a single image you would have a number of tiles at various resolutions.
