I don't know how High Speed Display works exactly, but it does make tracking action easier as the EVF is more responsive, smoother. It's also the default mode when using the electronic shutter. Which is one of the reasons I switched from the mechanical shutter to the electronic shutter. For non-action shots it doesn't matter. But it does for action shots. For me it does anyway.

When I first got my R6 and tried to shoot BIF, I used the mechanical shutter. And I kept losing the birds. It was just hard to track them (and I've been shooting BIFs for over 10 years!). There was a kind of stutter in the EVF. And I just lost them. Then I switched to the electronic shutter and my problems were over. It was way easier to track birds. Even fast birds.

I never set the High Speed Display when using the mechanical shutter because it's only available at certain settings, settings I wasn't using.

Hi, Levina. I must admit that the complexity of the R6/R5 AF kind of makes me miss my 1DX2. It just did whatever I asked of it, and it did it well. That said, the potential of the R6/R5 is amazing. We're nearing the end of the bad weather here in the Pacific Northwest, and I'm looking forward to getting out and really putting some of these AF settings to the test!

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.

Those are not FPS, they are Hertz (hz), which is the measure of the screen refresh rate. 120hz refreshes your screen double as fast as 60hz, so 120hz has "smoother movement" in the EVF but consumes more battery. You won't notice this effect with slowing moving subjects found in portrait, architecture, food, landscape, etc.

When I shoot soccer 120hz in the EVF is a must since the players and ball move very fast, if I used 60hz it cuts the response of the screen by half, so it feels "laggy".

Yep. This is what was confusing me when people were talking about fps. Levina pointed this out to me that people were trying to talk about “Hz” but were using the wrong terminology. As soon as that was pointed out it made sense to me.

:lol::lol::lol:

EDIT: and I could be wrong!

This is a quote from the Nina Bailey book “ Understanding the Canon EOS R6”. Does this address your concerns?
HIGH SPEED DISPLAY — The high-speed display mode allows the camera to cope better with subjects which move very fast. If the camera is set to its electronic shutter mode, then the high-speed display will be used automatically.
A big improvement on this model is that the high- speed display mode now works regardless of which lens type you have fitted to the camera, so it now works with both EF and EF-S lenses in addition to the RF ones.
I mentioned this control earlier in the book because now the cameras have been upgraded to put a black frame between individual frames when shooting at the high speed continuous drive and low speed continuous drive options, this is actually giving a better display
when shooting for most photographers than the high speed display option, so this is likely to be used a lot less.
You will find that this item is greyed out quite a lot of the time as the camera needs to be set to high speed continuous drive mode for it to be available. It will not operate in high speed continuous +, low speed continuous or single shooting or come to that either of the self-timer modes. It does seem strange that it doesn’t work in high speed continuous plus when it is in use when the electronic shutter is being used.
There are also other options on the camera that can prevent this working correctly the main one being Exposure Simulation which must be set to enable. Once you have all the options set that need to be set up for this to work you can simply go into the menu and change the disable option to the enabled option which will then show as ON, on the main display. When this option is selected it is possible the image may flicker slightly more, especially when higher shutter speeds are used. For this to work well the shutter speed must be above 1/30 and the aperture larger or wider than f11.
One thing that has been significantly improved on the EOS R6 is the refresh rate in the viewfinder, which now works at 120 fps as standard which prevents most of the problems that we saw with earlier mirrorless models.
In the testing I have done I have tried it with and without the high speed display switched on and although there is a difference it is subtle, so if you want to shoot at high speed continuous plus, the image that you’re seeing through the viewfinder is still perfectly adequate to shoot, thanks to the higher standard refresh rate.

I just bought my R6 last weekend (Febr. 12, 2022). I'm still a bit nervous as it sucks the life out of the batteries. I need to find the best settings to get as much life out of the batteries as I can. I'm coming over from the 6D and 80D, so I have a pretty decent collection of EF & EF-S lenses already. One lens that I've always struggled with is the Sigma 150-600mm C, never feeling like I get the greatest photos from it and always realizing I need to avoid the last 100mm on the long end of the lens. Well, this is definitely not the case on the R6. All three of these were taken this morning at 550 to 600mm range of the lens.

I ventured into electronic shutter for a very active bald eagle outing and very pleased with the results. I continue to be impressed with how well the R6 plays with the 100-400II and 2XIII. As an aside, there is no sky replacement here. The color differential is due to a cold front coming through, which this time of year brings in a lot of dust and grunge near ground level.

Very nice photos!
To understand everything about the R6, including battery life & settings, you may want to look into the Nina Bailey's eBook titled, "Understanding The Canon EOS R6." By the way, I have no connections or associations of any kind with Nina Bailey nor her magazine. This eBook was recommended by another poster in this forum before I purchased it (downloaded it) and read though it, and it has become indispensable for understanding the R6. While I downloaded it to my laptop, it would be quite handy to have it on a cellphone or a tablet when traveling.

I believe that the R6's battery, specially if used for still photography, can discharge a lot slower after the first or second charge. I can take a few hundred shots of the local sled dog races, and not worry about the battery's state of charge. I did buy a spare Canon battery, but so far I haven't needed it. I keep it warm in my chest pocket inside my coat, just in case I need it.

Bit of an opportunistic image just before sunrise. Went out to take some wildlife image but couldn't resist this.
