Rarely had much sucess in stalking deer. Rather just sit and wait otherwise this is what normally happens.

Yeah that happens quite often, you got a great photo out of it at least!

Walking very slow (a few steps, then stop, a few more, stop) helps a lot, often deer will think you’re another deer approaching. Keep the wind in your face if possible.

Wearing camo helps a lot too. Lighter coloured is better, if you wear stuff heavy on dark evergreen patches it will make you look almost black from a distance which doesn’t actually help much (think of whenever you’ve thought you’ve seen something black in the woods and then pick up the binos and realize it’s not black at all but dark green or brown when viewed closer up). Camo made of wool is very good, it regulates your body temp better (if you sweat while moving it will retain heat even while wet) and doesn’t hold onto odours like cotton, either. It will help you be more comfortable too which means being out longer for more encounters with wildlife.

Deer’s vision is also heavily based upon movement, so avoid quick movements. You can get away with a lot of movement as long as it’s painstakingly slow. Also, they see about 300 degrees and unlike our eyes which focus on a fairly small point like a predator with our peripheral out of focus, their pupils are oval shaped so much more is in focus to them (that’s why when you’re driving and a deer is looking at you as you drive by them, they don’t often move their head or eyes, you’re in focus the entire time throughout.)

Drove a few hours each way today to go look for moose. We found 4 (two cows each with a year old bull calf). It had been over 2 years since we had seen one. The ticks have ravaged them pretty badly, though but seemed healthy enough otherwise and were acting normal.

Got up at 2am today for another road trip and I saw 3 moose, including these two small bulls. All three were spotted from the road. My 12km hike with over 25lbs of camera gear on my back in the pouring rain resulted in nothing but a lot of moose (and some wolf) tracks and a far off otter.

I was being very quiet, just listening to the birds, when this mule deer trundled down the hill and very nearly ran into me.
