Pandemonium at the Zoo!

We just went out of daylight savings and it was a stunning fall day, so there were hoards of families at the zoo, enjoying somewhat relaxed gathering rules.

The first enclosure one encounters is that of the Red Panda - usually it is a no-show, being somewhat reclusive and generally not keen on noise. On this occasion, however, it was in frisky mood and roared around, doing laps of its enclosure before exhausting itself and climbing into the branches of the tree for a bit of a rest. All this brought hoards of families and the place was very busy, adding to the already formidable challenges of overcoming the massive changes in light and many obstructions.

THE FINGER:

I had sat in the Orangutan enclosure for over an hour, camera ready for a good shot. This was in marked contrast to the normal visitor, who spends a very short amount of time at any one enclosure - not surprising if you have kind in tow, mind you.

Still, the Orang obviously was aware of this, and after regarding me thoughtfully for a long moment, it gave me ... the finger!

Our zoo has opened up fully after years of restrictions, in time for the celebration of its centenary. A lot of building work had been done to make improvements for the occasion, which were themselves hampered by the lockdowns, but most of it is finally nearing completion. One of the major works was a large enclosure for tigers. Sadly, the one tiger we had, died, so they had to look for replacements. Our first one turned up this week, but when I went, hot-foot, to look at the beast, it is kept in isolation while it acclimatizes to its new home.

So, I had to content myself with a trip to the orangutan enclosure, where I got to see the male through an extremely grubby window, up close and personal. He is apparently not a morning person and was not keen on the noisy children showing their delight at his presence. So, I got only one shot before he retired.

The lens is the Tamron 18-300 f/3.5-506 Di-III-A VC VXD @ 100mm, f/8, 1/200sec, ISO-320

I really like greyscale images for wildlife where it will let us concentrate on shape texture, posture and expression - essentially, making a portrait of the animal as one would for a human.

Thus, to take a variation on a quote for portraiture where one can substitute colouring and vegetation for clothes:
“When you photograph people in colour, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in Black and White, you photograph their souls!”
