Prothonotary Warbler. Excellent, Steve. You have them nesting and we are getting them along the migration route only briefly as they return north to nest. We don't see them long. Thank you, Bill! They love the C&O Canal and swampy areas around it. They're one of the few warblers that nest here, using boxes placed in the canal or stumps of trees in marshes...so they're fairly visible for birders/photographers who hike the towpath. Some other warblers that nest here tend to bury themselves deep in forests.

steveb108 Goldmember More info | Apr 25, 2022 08:39 | #13004 In the field I'm mostly challenged when it comes to IDing warblers. The Worm-eating Warbler is a rare exception. If you can see the four bold black lines on its head (example in 2nd pic) it's a great giveaway...plus they are not sexable or ageable which takes the usual confounding factors out of the equation.
