That's where the 800/11 comes in. A pretty darn capable lens. With some restrictions, yes. But capable. I have one although I haven't used it much since getting the 100-500.

Here's the Kievit(Lapwing), sadly very dull background for the flock but it's something I don't see very often.

I shoot a lot in Waterland and they're everywhere. I can usually get pretty close. Or wait until they fly by. Their numbers too have declined though. They're amazingly good flyers and the males show off how good they are at it. It's an amazing spectacle. A couple of them will go up and do their shenanigans. They will even fly upside down. I took some shots of a couple earlier this year. They were a bit too far away for anything good, and light was difficult but here are two shots. Pretty big crops though.

Like the interaction you've caught, even with the crop they came out nice.

Lovely Oystercatcher, especially like the pose against the backdrop of foliage, I usually get them against the sky(which is often just dull grey).

Cool. Another bird (Curlew) I have only seen deep into the fields where I can't get to them. I only have a few shots for the record.

Thanks for the nice words on the oystercatcher. I do agree that a foliage background is usually nicer than a uniform sky. Here's another shot of the Oystercatcher from a few seconds later.

Thanks. I was shooting perched birds when he swooped in. It was also still quite dark (30 min. after sunrise). A shutter speed of 1/500s is not enough for these birds. Most shots in the sequence have a degree of motion blur in the wings. In this pic the blur was acceptable, I thought.

To answer your question, “ridiculous” because:
a) we are a very small country, so a thread for Dutch birds alone would be all too limited in scope, I feared, and
b) there are probably not even a handful of Dutch bird photographers on POTN, so I might have ended up being the only one to post in my thread.

Although, as it is, only Dutch birds have been posted in the thread so far, so I may have been wrong and “Birds of the Netherlands” would not have been too ridiculous after all!

Thanks Levina. I was somewhere in Noord-Brabant in "De Peel". beautiful part of the country.

Even 1/2500 isn't enough it seems...
