Willow (its pollen is a very potent allergen).

Is that a cigarette lighter?

It's going to be in for a nasty surprise of it chews through the plastic and releases the butane.

Has anyone experienced a situation where the eye AF seemed to jump around more than lock on with a particular lens? I have generally found the eye AF to be rock solid but did some shooting at a track meet yesterday with the EF 70-300L on the R6 and it seemed to lose eye focus from time to time.

Something rather worrying happened just now with the camera.

I had put on the RF 1.4xTC with the RF 100-500mm. The camera at first didn't see the extender as it read the aperture as 00, which was strange. But I reattached the lot and then all seemed to be alright. Next I'm watching the birds, not shooting. Then a bird flies up and I activate the camera by pressing a button. There was a strange loud clunky sound and the camera went dead. And I mean dead. Nothing worked anymore. I turned off the camera, turned it back on. Nothing. I removed the battery, put it back in. Nothing. Took out the battery, replaced it with another. Nothing. It was just completely dead. In the end I disabled the IS on the 100-500 and then turned off the camera. Then turned the camera back on and now it came back to life.

The thing is that this was not at all like the few lock-ups I had a year ago. This was scary as none of the usual remedies that brought the camera back to life then, now didn't.

One thing I'm wondering about though. A few days ago I tried a Kenko 1.4xTC with one of my old EF lenses, just to see how the Kenko would do. The camera couldn't see it, so the aperture was 00. Just like now, with the RF 1.4xTC. Coincidence? It was the first time I used the RF TC after that experience with the Kenko TC. Could it be that the camera remembered the Kenko and was thrown off by it somehow?

WOW. Yes, that is scary. Not so bad if you’re home and nothing important is happening. But what if you’re on vacation? Worst nightmare is your camera goes bad on vacation.

So now what Levina? I’m guessing Canon wouldn’t be any help and I’ve never heard of that particular situation.

I don't know what now, Phil. Maybe I should send Canon an email about it? Not sure if that would do any good though. But it was scary indeed because it seemed so severe. Worse than the lock ups I had back in December 2020. Then the camera would come back to life on its own after waiting just a few seconds. I didn't even have to turn off the camera or remove the battery.

So, I haven't had any lock-ups in 16 months and now it happened again after having tried out a non-reporting Kenko extender. I just don't think that this lock-up was a coincidence. I will never use that thing again on the R6, that's for sure.

Better throw that Kenko 1.4xTC in the trash! Seems a likely culprit. :p

I'd send Canon an email but they'll likely say "really? Never heard of that before"...

I just realised I was wrong about the Kenko. It was the Kenko 2xTC! And what's more I used it with my EF 300/4L. Making it 600mm. The same focal length at which my camera locked up again and again back in December 2020! The plot thickens! 8-)

I'm going to write an email about this to Canon. Will report back here if and when they respond.

EDIT: I just sent the email to Canon.

I had that happen last winter with the EF 100-400 and 1.4xTC on the R5. It turned out to be a problem with the lens and required repair at Canon. Fortunately it was still under warranty. Strange behavior on the RF 100-500 though.

Which Case do you have your AI Servo set to? Case 2 is meant to stick to subjects more so give that a try and see if the issue persists.
