Have you reassigned this button to another function and given up Exposure lock?

If you read this post please vote Yes or No. Discussion is welcome.

I use full back-button focusing, but I keep and use all the back buttons at their defaults.

Nope; I still use EL a LOT, since I frequently have backlit subjects...I tried moving things around once, but couldn't come up with an equally or more convenient spot for the function.

Yes, sometimes I do this:

  • AF-ON Focusing with the selected point.
  • * Focusing with pre-defined home point.
  • M-Fn Exposure lock

In this case, I have no focusing on the shutter button.

I didn't vote above, since this is not something I do all the time.

i havent reassigned the * EL button but the depth of field button on the front i have set up so i can toggle between AI-Servo and One Shot...

sometimes shooting sports, i need to recompose on an athlete who isnt moving so i mash it with my finger and focus, then recompose. holding it in holds me in One Shot. after that one shot (or 2 or 3) i release it and im back in AI-Servo

-im just trying. sometimes i succeed

I shoot in M most of the time so don't need exposure lock. I've reassigned it to spot autofocus.

That's a good idea. My C3 is configured for manual. Might use that there.

The only option I removed from the 5D Mark III’s was Auto Focus from the Shutter as I use the AF-ON for “The Art of Back Button Auto Focus”
Everything else is at their camera layout “default” positions.

I had no idea there was an exposure lock button on Canon cameras.

I use back button focus that a friend sets up for me on my cameras. . I don't do it myself because I don't like to read manuals and follow instructions. . So it's possible that some button gets "reassigned" when he does that. . But I have never reassigned anything intentionally or knowingly.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I often use spot metering or center weighted and as you know the 5D4 metering point is always center frame, it does not follow the focus point around the frame. So for example if I am shooting a well lit flower on a dark background and I have the flower over to the side of the frame, center spot metering would be off. So I meter on the flower, lock that metering with the asterisk AEL button, recompose, and fire. For this reason I have left the * button to it's intended default setting. As mentioned in post #6 shooting in full manual mode would free up the * button for reassignment.

Button reassignment is an awesome feature.

Except, it seems, when Live View is on. In LV the metering seems to following the focus point.

Since I voted. I use * to toggle between one shot and AI Servo. Chuckmiller does provide a compelling argument for default behaviour as I have AF ON set to one shot with centre point only so somewhat redundant but subtle differences.
