You might be surprised. It's like night and day on the 50-140.

Don't know, I've had mixed results with the 100-400, mostly being great at wider lengths and more hit and miss at longer lengths. As for AF I havent seen too much of an issue but there have been plenty of times where the lens just won't nab focus for what ever reasoning the past, the X-T4 is pretty good at AF so havent seen much of any issues in the last year or so but I don't shoot with the 100-400 very often anymore either. I'd say hold your pennies for now as the X-Summit is on at the end of this month so probably a few new items launched on the day.
You might be asking a little bit too munch of the X-T30 AF at F/11?
Not sure what I should or shouldn't expect from the X-T30's autofocus, at f/11 or otherwise. I certainly wouldn't expect a whole lot of difference between that and the X-T4 in the situations I'm putting the camera in with my birding, though I have heard before that TCs are very much touch and go.
That being said, I've had some success with boost turned on (might leave that on), but even then I can't say that it's what I would call a night-and-day difference in this particular case. Somewhat of an improvement, but not a significant one - at best the camera feels like a DSLR. Just now I've had more misses than hits, and by quite a fair margin, and in light that doesn't justify it. Even had a narrow miss on what could have been my first blue jay. (Also, is it normal that the zoom ring is rather stiff on this lens, or is it that I'm too used to loose Tamron zooms?)
And still, when all is said and done, I don't regret renting this lens, just like with all things Fuji, when it works as intended the IQ is pleasing indeed - not that Sony isn't good in that area either, but wham I like the IQ of those new birding photos. Will make not being able to afford that 100-400 and having to return it tomorrow that much harder
. I'll wait for the end of the month before making any purchasing decisions!
