He looks a little weathered, poor old guy.
I hope that isn't your lawn he's coming on.
Great image btw.

Thank you. He was a big guy. Probably pretty old. He was the biggest black bear I've ever seen.

After hearing about a sub-adult bear being attacked by a large boar in Yellowstone a few days ago, resulting in the young one being put out of its misery by park rangers, I looked through my photos from last year, knowing that I had photographed the cub. This was one cub of "Obsidian Sow", also known as "Mini Mom". I had a great encounter with them on the evening of May 10, 2021. I was driving through a snowstorm and suddenly, there was Mini Mom and her two cubs, walking down the middle of the road. I pulled over and they walked right past my car.

I fired off many shots, often having trouble deciding which bear to photograph as they left the road and walked into the woods. Everything happened really fast, and it wasn't until I was editing photos that I realized that this bear had walked over a small pine tree, apparently getting a belly scratching in the process. For a year, I've thought this was Mini Mom, but after analyzing photos from that night, I now realize that this was one of the cubs (and the bear that was killed Sunday morning). I know this because I noticed Mini Mom has a tag in her right ear, which is missing in this bear. Additionally, the other cub was much lighter in color.

Anyway, I realized that I haven't posted this photo in the forum, so here it is, a little late.

Beautiful nature scene.

You mentioned the young bear was attacked by a boar. I wouldn't imagine that would happen. Could the other way round.
That's nature for us, but I'd imagine it would be hard to put a wild animal down like that.

Thanks.

Maybe you are thinking the “boar” was a hog? In this case, the boar was a large male grizzly. Sorry for any confusion.

Yes, I would also imagine witnessing it would be hard.

Thanks for clarifying. Yes my mind was pig/ hog :-)

I watch male wallaby here mess with a much smaller female. He killed its young and still takes pieces out of her fur.

This is from last night, about thirty miles from home. It was a photo of chance, through the windshield, but I always like to see bears.

That's lovely to see.
Curious how many get skittled by cars? Hopefully none

Not sure a car would survive hitting one of those though.

There are a few that succumb to motor vehicles every year. I can think of about 4 or 5 that were killed cars in the vicinity.
The vicinity being about an hour and a half south of Glacier Park.
This was a young bear. When we first saw him, he was looking around with a "what do I do next" body language. This is the time of the year mamas kick their young ones out so they can gambol with their next paramour, and I suspect he had just received his walking papers, and didn't know quite how to act.

We have been fortunate enough to see Blondie (AKA bear 793) and her three cubs over the last several days. Here is a shot from yesterday of Blondie and two of her cubs as they looked for food in the sage brush near Leek's Marina in Grand Teton NP.

My take on Tom Mangelsen's version of "Eyes of the Grizzly". His photo is shown on his website. This is the same bear (Blondie) taken in GTNP, only it's about eight years after his was taken.

Edit: I saw an image I liked on the front of a local magazine and it was in B&W, so I thought I would try this one in the same way. Preferences?

Beautiful.
Those little ones look a bit scrawny. The front one particularly.
Are they? Or just appear to be?
