Not often seen in our waters is the Pacific Collector, a US telemetry and tracking platform, classified as a combatant ship on a couple of ship tracking websites. I was shooting photos of a surf contest when it appeared a couple of miles offshore off Waikiki Beach. Apologies for the quality of the pic as I had to severely crop the shot to get it presentable. As part of its mission it tracks ballistic missile launches.

A couple more shots of an Hawaiian outrigger canoe crew practicing for an upcoming competition and (correct me if I'm wrong) a regatta in progress out of the Ala Wai Boat Harbor.

Ooops, forgot to include this shot of a dawning day at Barber's Point Harbor, Kalaeloa, O'ahu where I work at a shipyard located there.

Nice capture, and good crop - I have not seen the likes of that in my neck of the river or ocean yet.
Classed as combatant must make it a bit vulnerable when it goes out alone.-?

Thanks Ray, I felt really lucky to be there at that time and place with the gear that was necessary to take the shot. It's times like that where enjoying our hobby as photogs adds a nice little tickle to the pleasure of capturing memorable moments in time.

A boatie pal advised me :

12-metre yachts. Used for the America’s Cup from the 1930s through the 1990s.

K5 originally British hence the K designation. Named Vanity. Built in 1936.

US-15 “Vim” built in the same era - 1940.

I thought this pic was a good candidate for filtering in a "sort'a painted look". I shot this composition of a yacht as it was leaving the Barber's Point Harbor from the Ko Olina Resort side of the harbor.
