That’s pretty much how I have set up my R6. I always used full BBF on my DSLR’s, but with the R6 saw no need for that any longer.

Oh - no BBF for mirrorless? Could you explain?

Because with mirrorless there is no reason to focus and recompose anymore. I do have focus lock set to a button for those rare occasions that I don’t want the camera to refocus.

is this true for any mirrorless - Or because R7 and other newer cameras have much improved autofocus ?

It’s because on DSLR’s the focus points were more or less clustered in the centre. On a mirrorless camera focus points cover the entire sensor area, so you can focus anywhere.

OK, I see. Makes sense. I have been using my R5 the same way as previous DSLRs and that works seamlessly. But you are right. I will change it and see if I can get used to it. It requires changing the AF method too, to <face>+tracking.

I have Face/eye-tracking on the shutter as my primary AF mode and have two back-ups for when it needs help: Zone-AF on the AF-ON button and Spot-AF on the * button. I feel that with AF back on the shutter, AF is faster. I’m very happy with my set-up.

The main difference with the R7 is that you can set up AI AF with subject detection and/or tracking for the Zone AF as well. That is how I have it. I have the default Zone 1, which is the square in the middle of the frame, setup for Zone AF. This directs the AI AF subject detection to only look at that part of the frame. For the single point, I don't have either AI AF or tracking enabled so it functions as a regular DSLR center point.

Very nice...would love to see that lens on the R7. Does it feel too unbalanced?

Yeah, in a sense. The R5 feels small on it as well, even with the grip. It is a big land heavy ens! You pretty much carry/hold the lens. I feel the difference more with the RF 100-500mm, because with the R5 with the grip it feels pretty balanced. Even without the grip, it is ok. The R7 feels a bit small, though nothing too bad.

Yeah, I read that. Should be very useful.

I thought I'd get my first image using my R7 posted. Was a RAW file processed using the only software than can currently, Canons own DPP and I don't like what comes out of it. Looks a bit 'mushy' to me. I much prefer DxO 4, so will re-do the image once they support the camera. I need a lot more time with it to set it up and get used to using it. Found it does the same thing my R6 did straight out of the box, and that is constantly focuses. Couldn't figure out how to shut that off as it was driving me crazy. Couldn't prefocus or adjust manually without it then just focusing again by itsellf.

Would converting to TIFF without any processing let you play with it in DxO?

Are you sure the camera actually focuses and you’re not just seeing the white tracking frame (=focus preview boxes, Canon now calls them ‘tracking frames’ in the R7 manual)?

EDIT: you can turn it off in AF menu 1, third entry: ‘Subject tracking’.

Not been able to get out much yet, but here is a picture of our Cat Jeeves looking particularly grumpy.

I used Animal Eye tracking as he walked towards me.

This one was with the 1.4x TC and a 2x Crop, trying to push reach. Even at 6:30 - 7:30 am it is a bit too warm right now. Park opens a 6:00am and the sun is already up :(
