it looks like BG-E2 handles will suddenly cease to be cheap:-)

I don't mind trying different things, found a BG-E21 for the 90D for $22 with free shipping at MPB in NYC. I bought it and will see how it will fit before I modify it

Well, my time with the Sigma 150-600mm was short lived. It locked my R7 up three times, twice requiring removal of battery.

Glad in a way, I was starting to second guess the size/weight especially relative to the R7.

Decided since it was going back I would gather up my EF-M Stuff (M6 II and Canon lenses) as well as the EF 100mm 2.8L that is almost never used, the RF 800mm, RF 100-400mm, and a few other odds and ends.

We reached a reasonable agreement, and I came home with the RF 100-500mm L. I would hate to have come home empty handed after spending all that gas money.

“Buy once, cry once” as they say… Size weight difference alone between it and the Sigma is worth at least $500:-D

Decided to keep the RF 1.4x TC for now - I think I am settled…

If it's the contemporary or sports version, there might be a firmware update, or there should be one soon since those are current models.

I thought about that, but with a limited time to return and a busy week ahead I didn’t want to find a puck, deal with it only to have the return clock run out.

If I had actually handled the 100-500mm I might never have even tried the Sigma.

RAW Burst Mode. Color me impressed!

I tried it out today, early evening. Used the RF 70-200mm f/2.8, so there would be no excuse for speed :). These little fellows are hard to track and by the time I reacted it was already on the upper perch. But wait, RAW Burst Mode to the rescue!

The results are awesome, but it is not for all the time. Plus, processing takes some steps in DPP to extract the individual .CR3 files. Cumbersome, but the results looked fantastic.

I've posted two shots in the sequence, but if you want to see the entire relevant (I trimmed of beginning and end shots) sequence in full res (well, full res conversion anyway, i.e. 1:1, since I cropped the shots a bit to concentrate on the action) see the link to the Amazon Photos Album (you can view the slideshow).

https://www.amazon.com …iQ.csWElWw6Mys2nIHMKjfB2F (external link)

[Note: I had to manually edit the time stamp for each photo so they would be 1 second apart in the right order, otherwise Amazon Photos would mess up the order.]

I processed the first shot, noticing special, just faithful color, auto tone, then synced the setting to the rest of the photos and batch processed all in Topaz NR since it was at ISO 4000.

It is looking good, can you clarify what focus setup you are using (area size, subject tracking, eye focus etc).

The 100-500L is an exceptional lens. I've owned the Sigma 150-600C and S models and they're great. However, I'd take the 100-500 over them in a heartbeat personally.

The price is a hard pill to swallow, and it may not make sense for most people. When I bought mine I sold my 100-400L MKII (which I bought used) and my Sigma 150-600C (which I also bought used) and those funded almost the entire 100-500L purchase. I had the previous two lenses from years of trading up and buying gently used gear and good prices.

The 100-500 has ridiculously fast and accurate AF compared to the Sigma lenses (I actually liked the Sigma 100-400C better than the 150-600C)
The 100-500 works amazingly well with the RF 1.4x converter, better then any zoom lens I've ever used with a converter before (including the 100-400L MKII and the 1.4xIII)...though it sucks you can only back off to the 300mm mark when using it.
The 100-500 is as sharp, or sharper, then the 100-400L MKII at all ranges which has always been one of Canons sharpest zooms but adds the extra 100mm reach as well
The 100-500 has a minimum focus distance that allows it to be used as a pseudo-macro lens, and it's damn good at it

The real con of the 100-500 is the price, and the fact that the supply is so short that the used market has no appreciable difference in that cost, which was a much different situation when I picked up my 100-400L MKII lens a while back. List price at the time for that lens was $2200 from Canon new, but I was able to get a pristine version for around $1400. I don't see that happening anytime soon with the 100-500, and that sucks

With the ISO performance of the R-series cameras I'm not seeing much of an issue with the 7.1 max aperture at the long end, in fact when I used it with the R5 I almost always had the 1.4x attached which brought it to f/10 max aperture at 500mm.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Jay, that is great info and food for thought.

As you say the price is a bit of a killer, if I got it at the moment it would probably be part of a divorce settlement! :-D

The thing that worries me is I am often shooting at 1/500, f/6.3 ISO 1600 with the 7D2 and Tamzooker kit.

Most images I see made here are in much brighter conditions, so I worry about lens speed.

Very interesting! It seems you have a couple of nice shots there, without any visible electronic rolling shutter problems. I'm definitely going to give this a try later!

I worry my old Tamzooka might suffer from this.

Were there any particular settings it seemed better or worse with?
