I was just able to shoot my first airshow a couple weekends ago. I had to rent a lens, I read some quick tips on taking airshow pics and started shooting. It was a great weekend, I wish they had more old war birds there, those are my favorite. I get goosebumps every time I hear those engines rumble over. The Blue Angels were there too and they didn't disappoint. Took over 2000 shots that day, and kept them all LOL Mostly because I want to see what settings I got more keepers in vs others. Anyway, here are a couple, Placid Lassie and my favorite, the P-51 Mustang.

Nice images chevyzen! How much did you like the Canon EF-100-400? (Enough to buy or recommend?)

Thanks for posting!

I loved it. I rented from Lensrentals.com, very easy process. First time I've ever done that. Picked what I wanted, dates I wanted and it was at my house a week almost before I needed it. I don't have a lot of experience with high end lenses, but I am pretty happy with my results for a first timer. I think the range was really good for what I was shooting as well. as my kids get a little older and if outdoor field sports are in their future, I will likely own this lens or one of it's future versions. For now, I'll just rent when I need it.

Speaking of the 100-400 II lens, I rented it several years ago for the POF air show. I also used my Canon 300 f2.8 IS II.
When I got home and reviewed the photos, I was pleasantly surprised at how good the IQ was from the zoom lens.
Hard to tell the difference between the zoom and the prime, the 100-400 II is that good.

A few months ago I bought a used 100-400 II from a forum member here. I hope to use it on the R7 or R5 at the
POF show this year.

The Canon 100-400 Mk2 is one of those all-time great lenses IMO. Jack-of-all-trades and master at most of them as well. Outstanding IQ and outstanding IS as well, Choice of 3 IS modes makes it the go-to airshow lens IMO. I have used it on a 7D, 7D2, 80D, and Fuji X-H1 and never been disappointed.

Also use it from time to time on a Fuji GFX100S, vignetting isn't that bad -- you can easily do a 4x5 crop.

I have no doubt it will be an outstanding performer on an R5/R6/R7.

Mine is a refurb that I picked up a few years back from Canon. As an aside, LensRentals is a great place to go to for both renting and buying -- their 'used' lenses are very good IMO. Recommended.

I cannot believe I have had my 100-400 IS II for over 7 years now. Bodies have come and gone, but this lens has remained a constant during that period. And it plays so well with the 1.4 EFIII!

Taken at the Tocumwal Airshow April 2022

For those in the SoCal area, the Planes of Fame air show held at Chino airport has been cancelled for 2022.

However, they will be flying their aircraft at the Central Coast Airfest.

A very long drive from Chino on our most gridlocked of highways to the airshow... however, if they ever decide to put their FW-190A Butcher Bird replica in the air again... it might just be worth the aggravation!

Thanks Manny, I spent most of the day below 1/80th for the take offs and landings.

Here is Mick Poole taking off in Paul Bennet's CAC Wirraway and landing some 15 minutes later, also at Tocumwal in April.

I am disappointed. Chino is about 60 miles from home. Coast Air Fest about 138.
Although the Coast show looks like it will be very nice. I may attend.

With a few more years practice, I hope to get some as sharp as you got. Those are great.
