Levina, I can just barely put weight on it with assistance of a walker. Pain is just going to be part of my life for a while.

The blessings of growing older. My grandfather used to say ‘it’s great to grow old, but being old is no fun.’ I never quite understood what he meant as a child, but being 68 now, I’m starting to get it.

Auckland's Sky Tower is the tallest tower in the Southern Hemisphere, but even so it can be difficult to shoot up close because of the mass of tall blocks erupting around it. After some judicious recon, I found this spot that not only affords a relatively uninterrupted view, but also puts in in contrast to the venerable older St Patricks Cathedral. Hand-held in available light.

I’ve been following this thread for a long time. I’m about to take the plunge to an R6 as a second mirrorless body since I just sent my last two mirrored DSLR’s and several lenses in for trade. I’ve been vacillating over this because of the megapixel count of the sensor but I also had shot for years with a canon 6D which has 24 megapixels and never really had an issue with it, it took amazing photos especially in low light since I do a lot of that shooting live music. I also figure that since it has the same sensor size as the 1DX iii I should probably not find it to be too limiting. I have an R5 and have had it for a while now and so I’m used to mirrorless and I wanted to get a second camera that had the same control layout as my R5. I have both types of lenses (Ef and Rf) and they all work well with my R5. Switching back-and-forth between that and my mirrored bodies especially in the dark and under pressure is a real pain and uniformity is important to me. That’s another reason I’m going with the R6 instead of the new R7 which has different controls. That and the llow light performance are what appeals to me. I shoot mostly wildlife and live music and some general photography, portraits, travel, macro, and landscape a little of everything. So when the deal is done and I get to used I will put up some photos here on the thread. Thanks to all of you for the great information on this thread it has been very helpful. Stay tuned.

As a sidenote my R5 died shortly after I bought it and had to be sent back to Canon for a new main circuit board. The same thing happened a few years ago when I bought a brand-new 7D Mark II!!! Both worked fine after the repair from that point on.

The R5 is great for scenic, where one wants the detail, and wildlife where the ability to crop is very useful. I find that the R6 renders one benefit over the R5 from its lower MP count - it has about 1 EV better dynamic range, so is better in low light situations.

As to what one will produce. There is a huge difference in the requirements for producing large, high-resolution Fine Art prints, compared to prints of a more modest size and a massive difference for images that will be viewed via digital devices or on-line: very often the latter are reduced in size dramatically to be posted.

I really enjoy the combination of the two bodies, and I hope you will find a similar result!

Thanks for the input. I have to keep in mind that I do make prints from my images (sometimes rather large but not gigantic). Usually the biggest (I got two delivered yesterday) are 24x36 or similar sizes. When I produce jpgs for the web (like my web site or flickr) I limit them to 5mb for ease of posting. When I produce a jpeg for printing either at home or at a lab (I print at home too, up to 17x22 now) I remove the file size limit.

A lot of photographers are pixel peepers, so like painters, they will not view an image from a comfortable distance that increases with the image size - but nose right up to it. To me that is not a practical exercise unless one is determined to produce rather expensive Fine Art images. For domestic purposes you should still get decent images with the R6, remembering as much depends on the lens as the sensor, if not more.

I have ceased to produce prints for framing. I had always admired the back-lit digital images shown in exhibitions such as the Wildlife Photographer of the Year. The trouble was that most digital photo frames were quite small. However, lately I found a couple displays that are designed for graphic image display.

The first one is by Netgear, and is called the Meurel. It looks like a framed, matted print, but is a 27" digital display 1920x1080, that is digitally correct for the colour gamut. It has a matt finish and a viewing angle of almost 180deg. I have one of these and like it.

The other is by Sumsung and is called The Frame. This is actually a dual TV and digital display, again optimized for images, and ranges in size up to 55"!

The benefits are the 'pop' of the image when it is generated by a light source, as opposed to reflecting light. Also, I can upload as many images as I like up to 8GB at a time, have them in exhibition sets, and have them cycle through as a pace I choose. The great thing is I can change the images for free, so over time it is much cheaper than replacing prints in frames. In this case the 20MP of the R6, or a lot of other cameras for that matter is far more than adequate.

A friend has bought several of these for their small salon, and for them it is great. They get all the pop of the images, and can change for different exhibitions super fast and for free. The image below shows my Meurel on my wall with one of my photos.

I've been having them made at CG Pro they do pretty well at canvas and metal. Also there is a local place in my area that makes really nice aluminum prints. They are called Shiny Prints in Jupiter, FL.
