Mystery little stick bundles on leaves

On my outing here in Ottawa yesterday, I saw several odd bundles of little sticks firmly attached to leaves. I'm wondering what they are and who made them. Any ideas?

I seem to remember reading about an insect that would camouflage themselves with sticks but I can't find a reference to it. Did you poke one? Did it move or was it just sticks?

Yes, I poked at one. Not knowing what to expect, I just poked with a leaf, and was a bit careful. The bundle didn't come off. I suppose I could have torn it off if I had held onto the leaf it was on, but I didn't do that.

Hmm, might be a bagworm.

That's my hunch from my cursory search.

Those are the critters I was thinking about. Found this page with a picture remarkably similar to yours (yours is way better).

Lol, thanks. This is the first time that I've seen these things as more than just forest litter. Interesting!

Next time I will have to see what's inside.

These used to be very common here

Ed the one I linked is immobile. The one I found on the ground was very mobile. Well at a slow gait
