Additional problem: I'm still on an old and tired Mac Pro that needs replacing and none of my usual apps can open the files. No Adobe apps and that includes the DNG converter, and not DPP either as the latest update can't be installed. So I used XnViewMP, an app that I recently purchased. It's a great raw viewer with lots of extras but I'm new to it so I'm out of my comfort zone. But it will have to do for now until I move to a new Mac later this year.

DPP update loaded fine on my (Win 10 upgrade) Dell xps I-7 3820 desktop from 2012, I think. Of course, your mac maybe really old!

Well, what you have here at 1600 pixels wide is clearly a product of nearest neighbor or some similar method. Look at the isolated lion hairs against the darker background; the hairs are in isolated beads that don't even touch each other and show background between them. Only the very worst methods of downsizing like nearest neighbor do that. Perhaps there is some other extra setting that is necessary for weighted averaging on downsizing. That lion image looks like 95% of the pixels were discarded with no influence on the result and the remainder composed the resulting image. The other images may have had the same processing, but if they don't have as much sharp fine detail they may not make it as obvious.

I appreciate all of the help and attention on this.

These are the JPEG export settings I used. The settings in the dialog above this are just things like file name and location.

I tried setting sharpening to "Screen High" but that made it worse (not surprising). Here is another export with sharpening disabled. This looks a lot better to my eye. This has all of my mods but without the additional sharpening by the export function.

I had a couple lockups today with the RF600, the screen froze and I had to remove and put the battery back, it happened twice

later with my 100-400ii it was fine

This is not a good sign. When I received the RF800 F11 refurb from Canon, I used it for several hours for two days. All was ok, then AF would freeze and lock up. Pulled battery and no help. Had to reset the camera. Working ok, half hour later same thing. I thought the refurb lens was wonky so called Canon and was told they would refund me as they were out of stock (refurbs). Boxed it up.

In the mean time, I'm using the kit lens and the AF starts locking up. Removing the battery was no help. But resetting the Camera fixes the problem. Today, the RF100-500 arrives and I put that on the R7 and everything was fine for about 2 hours. I called B&H and got an rma. I'm sending it back.

with the rental I put in about 6,000 clicks with no lockup, with this new camera I am up to 1,000 clicks and this is the first lockup.

I will try the RF600 f/11 tomorrow again, been using it in the middle of the day as my 100-400ii is slow enough in the dawn light often running 4,000 iso or more

My R7 was delivered today. Ten minutes in, shooting the gulls from home, it locked up. I had to remove and reinstall the battery before it would come back to life. At least my R6 had the decency to wait a few months before doing that. First I thought it was caused by the mechanical shutter. I mean, what IS that sound? I thought surely I had broken the camera! :-D On the R6 the mechanical shutter is soft, nice. But on the R7 it will scare away every animal in a mile radius!

I have mixed feelings about the camera. It's a rather strange camera, with an advanced AF system that's a step up from the R6 but noise levels a step, or two, down from the R6. I was rather shocked to see how much noise there was or could be at lower ISO levels (800 or less). And the buttons, OMG. They're just stupid. It's as if this camera can't make up its mind what it is: high end or low end, so it has features of both. It's just odd.

These are just first impressions of course, based on 200 images, shot from home. I will take it out for a real spin on Friday.

Additional problem: I'm still on an old and tired Mac Pro that needs replacing and none of my usual apps can open the files. No Adobe apps and that includes the DNG converter, and not DPP either as the latest update can't be installed. So I used XnViewMP, an app that I recently purchased. In the mean time, here are two shots from today. It was cloudy and rained a bit at times.
These are hardly processed. I'm just glad I managed to access the files and was able to convert them to tiffs and jpegs.

The shutter volume is adjustable, even for the mechanical shutter.
Wrench menu #3 -> Volume -> Shutter volume

EDIT: Nope. I was mistaken. That setting only applies to electronic shutter.

Jan Wegener also went crazy about how noisy the shutter is.

Scare birds/animals away? Why Canon, why?

Really? Well, then I'm in good company! :p

I had it in 1st curtain, (just to stay at 15 fps over 30!) and that didn't seem to loud, but it IS a very strange sounding shutter though!

Segue: Anyone old enough to remember "Operation Wolf"? Early shooter video game at the arcades with an "UZI" and with haptic feedback. The shooting feel was created by some form of geared cog inside rotating while rubbing against something, like a playing card in the spokes of your bicycle. The R7 shutter in 1st curtain mech feels the same!

Maybe its not playing nice with the EF converter ?

We went through this with the EOS R, the R5 and R6, and now the R7, it's never the EF/RF converter. (at least not so far, and I can't see that going backwards.)

It's these complex computer driven cameras themselves. They'll do it just as often with an RF lens. The firmwares come out, and the instances drop quickly.

No, LOL, I’m not. For some reason I thought it worked for mechanical shutter.

As Emily Litella would say, “never mind.”

EDIT: Found IT!

It's no longer called Continuous Focus,. it's now turned off on AF page 3, "Preview AF"

I had a ton of OOF image from my first outing that I could not explain, and this I believe was the cause.

---------------
I've got continuous focus stuck on,. and i can't find it in the menu to turn off.

A google search led me to this page where the images of the AF menu are totally different from my camera;
https://www.wimarys.com/canon-eos-r7-advanced-manual/ (external link)

Camstart online manual I can't find it in search, or just poking around the last 20 minutes. I remember turning this off on the R, I think I had to do it on the R5, but maybe not. But it's stuck on on my R7. Anyone know how to do this? It's not a menu option on my AF 1st page.

Really sorry to hear you are having issues with the new camera. Hope you resolve the issues and find some love for the camera. I hear what you are saying about noise - we have been spoilt with the R6.

More to the point, if it's always going to turn off after 8 seconds why then, WHY? does the menu let me set it to stay on for 1 or 3 minutes? IMHO regardless of workaround (pushing buttons) and reasoning to save power, this is a bug!

As I say earlier reading the UM the feature seems to be by design "camera active". Could be the design is wrong of course. -?

Sounds like a R7 firmware update is needed, unless they have just pushed the speed of on of the chips too fast, then they will need to try and fix by firmware slowing stuff down.

Can you advise settings uses, ie fps, AF modes, was AF preview on, EVF in hi speed or standard?

It might be there is some work around for now by understanding if it is a particular setting causing problems.
