I set a challenge for my local photography group. 1-1-1: One location - One hour - One image. This was to get us to slow down, spend time with a subject and observe, then be selective in producing one and only one best image.

For this one in the series, we went to the local zoo, each chose an enclosure, and went to work. I chose the Orangutans because they are my favourite animals - although they are often secluded or in an area behind a really grubby glass screen. On this occasion I was extremely fortunate as they were out basking in the winter sun to get some warmth. I spent a magic hour observing a female Orangutan that had recently given birth. She was constantly with her young, cuddling and caressing it, and smelling it - much like us!

Chris you really get some amazing landscape photos.
I'm curious if you wander out knowing there's lightning about and wait for it to happen?
Is lightning a frequent event there? It's not very common here

Well - I live 15 mins away from the park, so, I generally just check radar and see if any storms look like they'll stick around after sunset. If they have any potential I'll make the drive up. Generally speaking, from my experience this past year, the majority of lightning storms hit on either side of Arches, but not so much IN or ONTOP of Arches. Sometimes they'll kind of stick around the edges. That's not to say that anything can happen. I Have had a lightning storm form directly on top of me around the Sand Dune Arch area...and ended up trapped for a bit, but it was a fun / scary experience, trying to weigh when I should run across this quarter mile long trail completely exposed as things are flashing over my head. So yeah, you do need to watch what the clouds are doing, and yes, there's some risk. However, in the big picture, most of the time you're going to be in that 100-400mm range with storms hitting the canyonlands area west/nw of the park, or the storms will be over the La Sals east of the park. Either way, I would have an escape path planned should something form over you, so you don't want to work your way up some complicated off trail staircase of slickrock and then start getting hammered. GENERALLY there's warning signs you'll notice: Wind shifts, occasional rain drops, blowing sand... so if it goes from calm / swatting at bugs mode to a wind shear = you probably want to start packing up.

Everyone has their "comfort level" I believe far too many are on the more risk adverse side, but there's some that are in the Darwin category - for example - lightning LOVES to hit in the area higher up in Canyonlands, mainly the tourist area called Dead Horse Point. That place you do not want to be on when a storm is approaching!! Really anywhere in Canyonlands is high risk as the storms form fast and move quickly. Arches is nice, because you're generally getting the storms in canyonlands using the Arches as foreground figures (or trying to!).
