Charles, It may be a Bald Cypress, while the others may be Pond Cypress, but I'm just guessing. Ive got a cabin in S central AR not far from your location, and we have both.

And another suggestion, I see lots of older trees which were logged out about 100 years ago. Back then, they would make a scaffold by driving a couple of boards into the tree so they could cut them above the buttress. Those stumps later sprouted new growth around the cambium, and are now full grown trees like those in the background. But usually there are multiple trunks around where it was cut off.

Interesting. The rest of the tree looks normal, as in no evidence of being topped.

Ha thanks! The night lightining shots are easy.... 30 seconds = win... then just dial in your ISO so the resulting exposure is roughly about a stop under, this way if you get a bolt, you have some room to work with... if they're moving closer to ya, maybe start going -2 stops...
