Hi guys, I am brand new the world of photography and I have doubts....

I currently have a canon 500D eos camera with three lenses:

EF-S 18-55 mm 1:3.5-5.6 II
EF 75-300 mm 1:4-5.6 III
EF 35-80 mm 1:4-5-6 III

In terms of focal length I have quite a variety but the diameter that these lenses have is 58 mm and one of them is 52 mm and I've been looking for another one with stabilizer and bigger lens diameter (67 /72 mm if possible).

I was talking to a person who sells this lens and he sells it for 100 euros. (https://es.wallapop.com …fs-17-85-is-usm-777869798 (external link))

But he offered me this other one for 150 euros (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fn0dpvBpfT4&t (external link))

And I really don't know which one to choose...so for a difference of 50 euros .... which one I should choose?? according to him, it is much better the Canon EF 28-135mm. I mainly take urban and landscape photos but I wanted an 'all-rounder' lens for occasional sessions.

any help will be welcome, thanks !!! :)

I would go for the 17-85. It is a better focal range for a crop camera like the 500D and it is also a little sharper.

You have an APS-C size sensor...if you want

  1. wide angle FOV, you need FL in the 17-22mm range...the 'normal' lens FOV for that sensor size is about 31mm
  2. telephoto FOV, you need something starting at about 44mm ('short telephoto' FOV) 85mm and longer (85-125mm is 'medium telephoto' FOV on APS-C)

...and 17-85mm is a nice range of zoom to have as a tourist with APS-C who does not want to be burdened with the bulk and bother of multiple lenses.

If you had a camera with FF size sensor
  • 28mm-35mm is 'wide angle', 50mm is 'normal', and 70-135mm is 'short telephoto'

..and 28-135mm is a nice range of zoom to have as a tourist with FF who does not want to be burdened with the bulk and bother of multiple lenses.

So once again 'it depends' upon where in the FL range you feel would be of greatest benefit for the kind of shooting you wish to do.

And the 17-85 has IS, which allows you to handhold slower shutter speeds with less shake; the 28-135 is not an IS lens.

I'd pick the 17-85 just for the IS alone. For a similar focal range, a cheaper lens with IS compared to a full frame lens with no IS, definitely taking the former.

Maybe the world can still look beautiful tomorrow...
