As an avid fly fisherman stone flies are good news. Here they range in size from smaller than a mosquito for the winter stone flies (they can be found in April walking in the snow near local rivers) to the 3+ inch long giant stone flies which show up mid summer. No colours except black.

I'm guessing the body of that one was around 2 cm long. Why good news? Because they mean clean water? Or because they are a food source for the fish?

Yes to both but for my style of fishing (dry flies mostly) they mean clean water.
