The cap is so deep black, that the eye becomes almost invisible in the picture. I really like these elegant birds. We have the common tern here. Very attractive birds and great fishermen. I think I know the trees the woodpeckers near me hang out in. One of the holes was about 3 metres up and the other about 5 metres up but I have seen them 10 or 15 metres up. Both the trees I found this year have been used multiple times in the past, multiple holes up and down, so I'll know where to look next year!

We have these birds in our cities too. They breed on top of high buildings. Plenty of food for them in the city with all those pigeons. To have one come down to your garden is amazing though.
