As the thread initiator probably 7 years ago, and not having been on here more than 5 times in the last 5 years, its interesting to see where its gone.

I don't mean to offend, but I think many images would be stronger in B&W, getting down to the basics of composition and content.

Carry on. :-P

I've read about a similar finding, not with haiku but more generally. Americans attend more to the central or prominent objects in a picture. People in other cultures give more consideration to other elements and the picture as a whole. Maybe this is why so many images in the Flowers thread center a single big bloom in the frame, with a neutral background that lacks detail.

Its less ethnic-centric, but visual illiteracy to not work with the entire frame. For some reason though, I agree that many more people in older cultures have more appreciation for composition. Photo art from Vietnam and China is amazing and respected.

Maybe its the craft classes they called art in US middle schools. I taught photo and design at a private art college. These students could paint and draw anything wonderfully, and faster than I can type, but they had no idea about composition or what to do with the edges. I'm a huge fan of Gestalt design theory, but more about where the eye travels in and through the frame.

Yea eye travel!!! In my theory of composition, based on axioms that the eye is lazy and not very smart, all you need to do is to make the image a comfortable place for the eye to explore.

I don't know anything. But I know other things.
