Thank you Martin! I think I am ok with what you wrote down to "You can manually hand track the moon while recording video no problem."

I believe you are saying to "manually move the "tracking" of the moon while in video mode which will make the video jump quite a bit I believe. The mount I use and love is my Manfrotto 410 Geared Head. I had never heard of an Alt-as mount. I googled it which they seem to be made for Telescopes which I do not own.

I really not am into doing video work, but I am willing to give it a try to get a better more sharp single image. is it possible to change the FPS rate of video?

I would think to make a video of the moon at 1200mm without moving the camera I would only get 2-4 minutes before the moon goes outside the live view of my camera. Should I try using my Geared Head to move the tracking of the moon in my live view?

Thank you very much!

Hi,

Yes you can move the setup and hand track the moon while shooting video. It will jump around. Then stabilize and drift again. Your Manfrotto tripod is an alt-az mount. Your lens is a refractor, no different really from a telescope, just more complicated with focus motors.

On your 90D you just need to look at your options for video. It looks like you can do 120 FPS but at 1080p and you can do 60 FPS for 4k. So try your 4k setting at 60 FPS. Go as long as you can.

2-4 minutes is a lot of time. Go for it. Think about it, at 4 minutes operating at 60 FPS you would have 14,400 frames to work with. And yes, using a tripod that has any sort of smooth or mechanical movement is better than hand tracking.

Very best,

Thanks Charles. Where I'm working in Baltimore, there are usually Hawks and Falcons sitting on top of the light poles. None Thursday night, but the sky was exceptionally clear, so I took advantage of it :)

Lurking at this thread reminds me so much about this month's moon phase. I'm glad I came here.
