One of the smallest butterfly I'd ever seen.

Very nice work as usual Jay. How do you like shooting butterflies with the 300 compared to the 100-500?

Thanks!

Using the 300 was more of an experiment, and it worked better then I thought. I really liked what it produced, but the 100-500 is so much lighter and having that zoom range makes it extremely flexible. I don't think I'd stop using the 300, but I'll probably use the 100-500 more overall

I think these are Sonoran Skippers, but I'm not sure. They're much harder to ID than birds

Brimstone - I've been trying to photograph one of these on and off for sometime but unlike some others they are pretty skittish. Fortunately this one stayed in one place for a few minutes though it was pretty windy.

Some butterfly pics from the garden around a Swiss holiday residence.Taken with a R5 and the RF100-500. I think it is a cabbage white.

Two more, I think it is some sort of skipper and therefore qualifies as a butterfly... Taken with the R5 and the RF 100-500.

Eastern tiger swallowtail, taken in my garden. It has been really hot for the last few weeks, average temps 85-90 F, (29-32C) and at least 10 of these guys were all over the Zinnia that I mixed in with the tomato plants.

Great shots!

Zinnias are wonderful for attracting butterflies. I planted them this year and have been enjoying watching all the pollinators every day.

If you plant plants for the larval stage also, you will get even more butterflies.

Scotch Argus (Erebia aethiops). Although these are widespread in Scotland, there are only two sites in England where they are found, so every year I make a bit of a pilgrimage to see them. Well worth the journey every time!
The first shot is a hand-held stack of nine images, as I couldn't get the position I need to have the wings parallel to the sensor without spooking it.
