Young Kestrel hunting for mice from a fencepost.
After a few dive bombs into the grass with no success he left for a better hunting ground.

I also never knew that or would have known! I would have thought there is no way they could eat anything that large!!

I have some other pictures (that didn't come out well) of him slamming it to the ground & shaking it. And about a week prior, I watched a juvenile robin do the same with a small frog or toad.

I was surprised, so I looked it up at All About Birds & this is what they say:

American Robins eat large numbers of both invertebrates and fruit. Particularly in spring and summer they eat large numbers of earthworms as well as insects and some snails. (They have rarely been recorded eating shrews, small snakes, and aquatic insects.)
