By the way, our track width is typically 4 foot 8-1/2 inches. It does get wider on curves and like many things, exactly written standards exist.

Our Washington DC Metro Subway uses 4 foot 8 inches instead of the above standard. Little known info. It allowed them to make slightly tighter curves in an already built and busy city. Yes, 1/2 inch made a difference!

I read somewhere there was competition between train promoters that saw different widths to prevent opposition using their lines. Not sure how true that was. That was when steam was becoming fashionable

During the American Civil War, there were many different track gauges in the US. Cargo and troops often had to be carried from one railroad line, across the town or city, and loaded onto the other railroad because the cars and engines could not operate on each other’s line. They were not only different widths, but also the height and style of the rail were often different, as well as how they were laid. Caused all sorts of problems. After the war, they started to standardize them more.

1752 is towing the broken down 1750. Both locos are operated by the Nederlandse Spoorwegen/Dutch Railways.

the 189 series is a multi-system locomotive, which means it can be operated in different countries using different electrification systems (hence the 4 pantographs). In the Netherlands we run 1500 volt DC. In Germany they run 15kV AC 16.7 Hz.

Starting this month, Midcoast Railservice is the new rail company running our little branch line here in costal Maine, taking over from the Canadian Pacific. It is a brand new subsidiary company of the Finger Lakes Railway in New York. The locomotive is a GE B23-7, a vintage 70's unit. It is shown here being towed up to its new home in Rockland Maine. I hope to get some shots of this leading the cement trains soon.

I took a ride up to Cajon Pass this morning to see how my new wheels did on the different roads along the tracks. These three photos show three trains that passed by my location in a short time.
