Aug 14, 2022 22:39 | #2723 drsilver wrote in post #19415591 ![]() Has anybody taken a shutter count from a 90D? I bought mine used about a year ago from a kid who only used it for video. He told me he'd never tried just taking a picture with it. I got the impression it was bought with dad's money and he got bored with it. Used but unused. Anyway, I took it home and took a shutter count. Dire Studio Shutter Count gave me <3,000. I thought, OK, that's in the range I was expecting, but my other cameras give me an exact count. Maybe below a certain number, that's all they can get? It's not my main camera, but a year later, it's seen significant use. And with a long lens, it's my action camera, so burst mode gets exercised. If I had to guess, I'd say 8-10K on the shutter. Shutter Count tells me <18,000. So all I know is that it's got somewhere between 3001 and 18000 clicks. Is anyone else getting an exact number? Is there something about the 90D that keeps Shutter Count from getting that? ![]() Hosted photo: posted by drsilver in ./showthread.php?p=19415591&i=i56895835 forum: Canon Digital Cameras ![]() Hosted photo: posted by drsilver in ./showthread.php?p=19415591&i=i58298870 forum: Canon Digital Cameras If you have a Linux box install gphoto2 >>> Pictures? drsilver Goldmember ![]() More info | Canon is a pain in the rear to get a shutter count from. It started with a certain processor build, Digic 4 or 5. You have to hack the OS now to get at the shutter count. I've only found one app that I can make work most of the time from a company on the brighter side of shady. And they only make the app for Apple products. It's one of the 3 apps I run on an Ipad.

I've got 3 DSLRs, all with different processors. The 90D is the newest with a 2019 Digic 8. Canon doesn't run OS changes by Dire Studio, ever. Maybe DS hasn't cracked the code for the Shutter Count product for the Digic 8 processor. And maybe they've moved on to Digic X or whatever for Shutter Count, leaving us with rough approximations. Oh well. Has anyone else noticed approximate shutter counts on the 90D or is it just me? I've never been able to get a shutter count from a Canon body. But I number all my pics sequentially starting at 0001, so I always know how many shots it has taken. This has proved sufficient too when selling a body, even if it is just my say-so to the buyer. No, because you can change that to some other number for whatever purpose, and also the number can change if you insert a card with a different number. That latter can easily happen by accident if you put the wrong card in. Jeff USN Photog 72-76 wrote in post #19415823 ![]() wish they would allow up to a million or at least 100k I keep the 0001 each time it rolls over in a file on my pc by each camera body... My 90D is just over 50k I renumber all my 90D files, replacing the IMG_ with 90_0. Then when it gets past IMG_9999, I replace it with 90_1... and so on. That way I don't have duplicate file numbers. Then when it gets past IMG_9999, I replace it with 90_1... and so on. That way I don't have duplicate file numbers. Back when I first started digital photography, I just left the file names the way they came out of the camera. I didn't think there would be much chance of identical file names, with all the culling that I do, and if there are a few that are the same, no big deal, I will sort it out. But I soon found out that was not a good plan. I started to get lots of duplicate names, and it was really confusing. So I changed my ways! I renamed all files so they start with a 2-character code for the camera, followed by underscore, followed by a string of 5 sequential characters. I usually add some descriptive text too, but that is just to help me know what the pic is about, and it helps when doing searches. So I might have something like 90_10442 Tricolored Bumblebee.CR3. I use a BAT file in Windows to renumber the prefix, and Lightroom to add the descriptive text. You've got to be careful in LR because its renamer is awful. If you make a mistake and name 100 files "Grizzly bear" (because that was the previous rename) and you had intended "Dragonfly", you will likely have to do a lot of manual renaming, because LR doesn't do search and replace. You lost me, I did not really understand what you are doing. Charles
