Where do the Canon bodies roll over at? 10K?? I am currently at 2848 so I do not take NEAR as many pictures as others do.

My body was new Sept. 2019.

It will go to 9999 and then skip to 0001. There is no 0000! They cheat you out of one shot!

Obviously they did not go to a 5 digit number so they would have to stop at 9999

You lost me, I did not really understand what you are doing.

Charles, it won't be an issue for you if you are only at IMG_2848 and have never rolled over.

But if you do roll over and shoot lots, you will eventually have a second file called IMG_2848. To avoid confusion, you could rename the files after rollover so there won't be dupes. The camera won't do that for you (some cameras can, but not the 90D), so you can do it yourself. What should you call the files after rollover? How about IMG10001, etc? That will work. Up to you.

As mentioned in my previous post, I also replace the IMG part to 90_. That is to keep each camera's naming system separate. Canon's default names for all its cameras start with IMG_. So I could have IMG_1234 from the 90D and also IMG_1234 from the R5. That could be really confusing. Not an issue if you only have one body and keep that body forever, but I have had a fair number and will get more.

Obviously they did not go to a 5 digit number so they would have to stop at 9999

There are industry standards for file naming and storage on memory cards that are agreed to by the manufacturers, and that prevents them (for now) to going to more digits.

Forgive the newbie question, but why would I even care? Other than wear and tear on the mechanism, useful to know maybe if buying a used body, I'm not sure why it would matter.

10K

I rarely get dup file names as I delete 95%+ of my images, at least as far as birds. will keep 10 out of 1000

In database systems there's a concept called the unique identifier. A 4-digit number makes a lousy unique identifier for the reasons discussed above.

I only use the file name that comes out of the camera as identification until I bring it into my workflow organization where it acquires a creation date and file system folder as part of its unique identifier. I don't even like it when the count rolls over and the camera makes a new directory. It just makes me make 1 directory out of 2 when I pull the images off the card.

So for me, file name management at the camera level isn't a suitable replacement for an accurate system tally of shutter clicks. Shutter click data is maintained on the camera. Canon just chooses to make it nearly impossible to access that data. Pretty much everybody else writes it to EXIF with every exposure. Processing overhead in doing that rounds to zero. One line of code. Canon could change it with firmware.

I store my photos on a second hard drive inside my computer different from Drive C. My Digital pictures are stored in a folder called "Digital Pictures". Inside of folder Digital Pictures I have many more folders each named from my many different Cameras I have owned over the years. A folder for Olympus FE-190, Olympus C730, Canon FS30, Canon XSi, Canon 60D, Canon 90D, and many more. I do not think I will need to worry about file names doubling up since I do not take millions of pictures like some people do.

Good stuff, Charles. You have no file name worries then.

But even if you don't, you might want to understand what my scheme is, because you asked about it. So let me explain more clearly.

As stated, I replace the first 4 characters of the file name. So what happens is
IMG_0001 > 90_00001
IMG_0002 > 90_00002
IMG_0003 > 90_00003
...
IMG_4729 > 90_04729
...
IMG_9999 > 90_09999

Then comes the exciting part. The camera's counter rolls over, back to 0001. Now my prefix changes, from 90_0 to 90_1.

IMG_0001 > 90_10001
IMG_0002 > 90_10002
...
IMG_9999 > 90_19999

All those file names are unique. Eventually it will roll over again, and then I go to 90_2.

IMG_0001 > 90_20001

In this manner I never have duplicate file names - unless I exceed 100,000 files, and I've never done that. But there are easy ways to deal with that if that should happen.

Many cameras will create custom file names reducing the need to rename, but not the 90D.

Thank you so much for explaining what you do more clearly for me Archibald! I suspect you take one new picture on a new SD card, then take that filename and rename it to 90_0 or 90_1 or 90_ 2 correct?

It's how I rename files after they are transferred to the hard drive.

So you have to rename, what over 100 filenames on the SD card after copying the files to the hard drive??
