I love the forum and community but the web UI's is more than 1 click away from what I want to do.

It also have multiple dialogue boxes asking if I am sure I want to do X Y or Z that is not connected to data privacy.

Like if I want to like a post instead of 1 click to like I have to confirm that I am liking a post.

It feels like going to a restaurant and asking for 1 steak and the waiter keeps asking other customization I want.

Confirmations are asked on data removal (unfollow, cancel post etc).

Like opens a popup to show who liked, and also for undoing your like. It will also have an attached quick reply (i.e. "like reply") box in the future.

But they do, nowadays :)

For example.

If I like your post

After the click I get a dialogue box giving another choice of "Like this Post" or "Cancel" to the left of it is a list of people who like the post.

At the risk of being told to go elsewhere but other forums just complies with the "like" and adds your name to the other people who liked the post.

Even facebook does this my guess is to save time on user and server resources for forum.

Some other dialogue boxes start shaking and jostling about.

I get other people enjoy this but is there a way to opt out of the animation and extra clicks?

The two-step Like button is an improvement over the first version that came with AMASS! software. It makes it harder to give a Like by accident. Tapping unintentionally is too easy with the sensitive touchpad on my laptop.

Was giving a like by accident that problematic?

I point this out as Facebook, that has billions of users, uses the more conventional 1 click approach.

If you accidentally give a like then click the like button again to unlike.

The UI preemptively second guesses you on everything you want to do.

There is no way to opt out of "Tutorial mode".

Another unique UI element is the toolbar on the left margin.

It takes 4 clicks to insert a URL onto a phrase or word.

Accidental Likes weren't awfully problematic, not even comparable to breaking a toe, say, but I find the two-step Like mechanism a convenience.

I've never used Facebook and am not sure that my nonhistory with Facebook is relevant.

Personally I like it as it is.
Having software doing things for you is fine IF you're in total control.

I've thought similar, why not just click like and move on. But the more I thought about I liked the way it is.
Another two forums treat it differently and it's too easy to cement your option in place when you had no intention of making such a move.

It doesn't take long to click Like and again click to make that choice.

My 2 bobs worth

PS. There's a lot more to this software that isn't apparent at first glances, even long use. I'm still learning.
There's some brilliant stuff that's there for us users

As you brought it up there's a learning curve on how to do things.

As it tries to reinvent the wheel on how things are done or at the very least make you learn a new system I was surprised that the BbCode syntax was still used rather than a customized code that is exclusively AMASS-only.

Not a complaint about POTN, the community or the creators but just an observation on how the forum may be more user friendly?

Agreed. You didn't bring it up, I did. I had in mind that each forum is different and what suits Facebook designers and users won't necessarily apply to POTN. I wouldn't expect the two venues to match.

.

.
I realize you addressed this question to someone else, but I will give my reply anyway.

I pretty much quit Facebook because of their UI. . Any time I went to FB, it was so difficult to find what I was looking for. . I would just give up. . Could never wrap my head around the way FB laid things out or how to do what I wanted to do there. . Interacting with Groups was always especially complicated and confusing.

So, I still have my Facebook account, but I barely ever use it. . If I get an email saying that someone tagged me there or something, then I will click on the link to see whatever they said about/to me. . But other than that I avoid FB, solely because I can't figure out the user interface (particularly with regards to groups).

But I absolutely LOVE the software here that Pekka has designed. . Never had to try to figure anything out. . Almost everything here on POTN just "works" intuitively, the way I would just expect it to work without having to think about it or learn how to use it.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

The use of yes/no confirmation dialogs seems very 1990s. For things that really don't matter, and are just as easy to undo as they are to confirm, it just adds a step for everyone who got it right the first time as well as the few who accidentally clicked "like" or whatever. There's no consequence to accidentally liking something.

Confirmations have their purpose. For me it's when there are greater consequences for a mistake, such as 1-click ordering. I'd rather go to a screen which shows not only the cart contents but also the card used, shipping address, etc because I have multiples of those. That screen is basically a beneficial confirmation dialog. Deleting or moving a lot of files, a dialog is useful especially if it lists the files you're acting on and the destination. MacOS, when you want to shut down, does display a confirmation dialog but it times out, so you can have a 1-click shutdown or restart if you just walk away. Sort of a smarter confirmation dialog.

Animations can serve a useful purpose. When a screen element jiggles because it needs your attention before you can proceed, that's useful and intuitive. The animations here are pretty benign and don't bother me, though, because they don't give me the feeling that they're wasting my time. They're just kind of cutesy.

At this point, though, I think users would prefer that dev time was spent on the gear database rather than the interface.

Your comparison to facebook is irrelevant. The number of users isn't indicative of the quality of the software. Facebook has been losing users. By the metric you mentioned- "that has billions of users, uses the more conventional 1 click approach", does this mean people don't like their UI any more? Facebook is losing users: https://www.theguardian.com …-tech-giant-begun-crumble (external link).
