I think I know why... but it's a difficult concept to describe in a consice manner:

Do "better" cameras have their place - yes -

Does everyone "need" the better camera, or, can they simply become better?

Now - which is easier? buying the better camera OR becoming better?

Which one does society push? and why?

And the problem with owning "the best" is that - people will dismiss your work as: "Well... that photo was captured BECAUSE of the camera..." and move on...

So for me, weirdly, I actually ENJOY not having "the best" but more so, making the best of the "un" best camera :-D

Its' sort of why you see people that have tons of money to blow, and they don't pick the fastest car or the biggest house. There's where one can become content maximizing it's abilities, and it's "enough" because it's not about the end result, nor should it be. It's about the process of doing. I think it's a very nuanced concept, because we're in an age of: Everything has to be extreme / ultra whatever...

I think it is all about expectations. Many reviewers and purchasers expected the R to be a 5D IV replacement and it is not. Of course many reviewers trash virtually all new cameras.

The R is great for my landscapes and many other things. When I bought my R I didn't expect it to replace my 80D for wildlife. I love the R for what I use it for.

I get it. It's not for everyone.

I seem to remember a lot of the YouTube reviewers didn't like something about the video capabilities. Since they were YouTube people, that was what was most important to them. I think that may have hurt the reputation of the camera. Of course, for landscape I think it's turned out to be great.

I've got three EOS R bodies I use professionally for portraiture. Sometimes I think I'd like more resolution, but in fact it wouldn't make any difference in my bottom line. None of the "better" Canon cameras would make any difference in my bottom line.

Agreed.

Of course YouTubers also complained about the single card slot, touch bar, EVF lag and slow frame rate. None of those bother me for landscape. I think it was RobAmy, here on POTN, who got some fantastic bird shots with the R.

My first foray into mirrorless was the R. I was upgrading from the 5DII, so it was really an upgrade. I loved the camera. Then I got the R5. Another great camera. So I decided to mod the R into the full spectrum IR. So far its been great. But I missed the straight R so much I bought a new R body. So my fleet is now a R5, regular R, and the full spectrum R. Life is good. Just got to get a bigger camera backpack now.

But the R only has one card slot. Didn't you know it can't be used professionally! ;-)a

I wonder what percentage of professionals actually save to both cards?

But I do have two card slots! One in each camera body! When you add the R5, I have FOUR card slots!

I can see their point, particularly for weddings. I can only presume that wedding photographers actually are using both cards.

The very first wedding I ever shot--'way back in 1972--I had a severe failure. The film sprockets broke on my 35mm camera and the film stopped advancing. I wasn't aware enough at the time to keep an eye on my rewind know to check that film was advancing, so I went through most of the wedding shooting that way with that camera.

However...back in those days, the 35mm camera was for the "action" shots that were kind of a new thing back then. Back then, good wedding coverage was still considered the album of posed shots.

Also, a "real" wedding camera was medium format. I had just bought a Yashica 124G TLR (the first camera I made money with), and I'd taken all the posed album pictures with that, as well as the other key semi-posed pictures (bride and groom exchanging rings, first cut of the wedding cake, et cetera).

So...I was saved by two cameras.

Whenever possible with portraits I tether to a laptop, even on location. Images go to both a card in the camera and to the laptop hard drive. And also, I use an application that automatically replicates the image folder on the laptop hard drive to another SD card in the laptop every few minutes.

Three "cards."

I don't understand the hate for the touch bar. I have it set to change focus points from small to wide and it's great to be able to do that on the fly. It's one of the most useful additions for me.

Bingo - this is why I ditched the R5 - I figure sell it now, get some $$$ out of it before the newer latest greatest SHINY camera comes out... I have zero birds/wildlife here, and if needed, I can dust off the 90d for those purposes... besides: $1599 for the R is a STEAL I think they jacked it back up to $1799, and I've heard it has been as low as $1299. That to me is WILD for a full frame camera...

For those interested in L-Brackets for the R that allow full articulation of the screen, the only one I know of was from ProMediaGear and has been discontinued. It had some flaws but I made it work. It is big and heavy even after cutting off parts not needed. The rods that held the vertical portion in place had play in them so I replaced them with long bolts.

Then I saw SmallRig had a cage for the R. After carefully examining pictures I determined that half of the cage could be chopped off and be a much lighter, smaller sturdier L-Bracket. The vertical portion fits much closer to the camera and is much thinner. Here are some pictures for comparison. The shiny aluminum is where I chopped it.
