Why did you spend $13K and shoot at F11?? :p Great shot BTW!

I know the OP was talking about a RF600 f11 however for what its worth I have been known to shoot birds in flight at f8 and sometimes as narrow as f11 if I have good light with my RF 600 f4 . THE narrower aperture wider DOF certainly helps get a bird in flight in focus especially if the af focus lock hits the tip of a fully extended wing by mistake . Especially on large birds with huge wing spans like Cranes and Black necked storks etc. For me the magic of the rf600 F4 prime is more in its overall optical quality, quick AF and sharpness . Yes f4 is great in lower light or when you want good bokeh on closer backgrounds but narrower apertures are still usefull on the RF600 f4 when the bigger birds start flying by

Cheers

A dotteral shot with the RF 1.4 extender. This gives 850mm @f5.6 .

Thank you for the support. I posted in the wrong thread by mistake. You are correct on the DOF especially on large birds, if you have a nice heron in flight and the eye is sharp but both wings are fuzzy, or an eagle with spread wings and the wings are out of focus it doesn't look good.

I am impressed with anyone shooting the 600/4 as it is so heavy, at my age and physical state I have trouble with my 100-400Lii.

Weight difference of the past 25 years of select Canon EF & RF lenses.

Bonus: NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S

I would not be surprised that these RF lenses will be less than 2.2 kilograms when released within 20 months

is there any QI or AF speed difference between the Ef and RF version?

It focusses faster with the R3. But otherwise no IQ improvements, but the extenders seem to be a bit better.

Hi Clipper- Your photographs are wonderful! I just got the RF 600mm lens 2 days ago and yet to do some serious bird photography. I also have a Canon R5 to go with it. Could you please tell me what tripod/monopod combination you use and if you use any ball heads? I have a pretty sturdy monopod and am looking for a ball head that the lens foot of the 600 mm would be compatible with. Any tips/advice would be really appreciated. ߙϰߏ

P.s.: Iݢve attached the first 2 photos taken from the new lens. This lens is unbelievable!

Dear Jeff, you sure got a great photo. I was specially curious, how would the lens perform on R7, because mine is R7 too.
And you proved it would perform excellent!
And could you please share the exif of this photo BTW.

wow. That is even more interesting. How could you take such a great photo with f/11. I have the 800mm f/11, and it performs good only in bright light.
