I haven't seen one since, until this afternoon in almost the exact same place. They love hiding in the reeds so are really hard to get a shot of (or even to see). But I surprised this one (and myself!) and had about half a second to get a shot before it realised I was pointing this big ugly thing at it and flew off to another reed bed too far away. That’s a nice catch, Pippan. Your description and how it looks made me think of our water rails, also skittish and always hiding in the reeds, so I looked him up and sure enough, they’re in the same family.
