Saw this turtle at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary today and noticed the 2 "prongs" under the chin.

Cheers

Dennis

EDIT: It appears to be a Mary River Turtle, and the "prongs" are chin tubercles, for feeling around in the mud/silt.
A Mary River turtle breathes through its cloaca, a part of their genitals, which allows them to stay under water for up to three days.

What a sharp, detailed image, Dennis! This Mary River Turtle certainly has some interesting features. Thanks for your explanations.

Great shot of this well armored critter, Paul! I've always thought of them as appearing kind of odd looking and out of place. I'll bet their coats of armor have saved their lives many a time.

Wow Dennis...the sharpness here is amazing! I have to ask...do you enjoy the R3 more than the R5?

Hi Mike

I am lucky to have both.:-)

The R3 is 24MP and my early thoughts are that where the subject is reasonably large in the frame, then 24MP is enough. I recall that my 40D was 10MP.;-)a

If I were shooting small birds from a distance, then the 45MP of the R5 would be a more suitable choice to allow for greater cropping.

The ergonomics and handling of the R3 feels really good and “natural” which really surprised me, as I have shot with the 40D, 7D, 5D and R5 bodies which all handled really well, and I did not expect such a noticeable difference in the handling and feel.

If I had to choose only one camera for the stuff I like to shoot, it would easily be the R5, as the ability to crop for small birds trumps the lovely feel of the R3 in the hand.:-)

Cheers

Dennis

Thank you very much for your evaluation of the R3 and the R5 Dennis. I really appreciate your taking the time to respond to my question. I've also have my eye on the R7. I really like and want the crop factor of this fairly new APS-C camera. Too many choices.;-)a

I think this may be a juvenile Crimson Rosella as the tail hasn't yet grown to adult size.:-)

The flower is from the Grevillea family, a native to the region that grow informally as ground covers, shrubs and trees.

Cheers

Stunning shots. The Crimson rosellas are so pretty. Definitely an adult that has lost its tail though. Juveniles have green feathers on wing and belly until they're about 12-15 months old.
