A striking medium-sized kingfisher of lowland and foothill forest. Whitish below with dark scaling and dark green above with buff spotting. Bill bicolored, black above and orange below. Note the broad black band through the eye, reaching the back of the head, and the green crown and rump. Male has a full rufous collar, throat, and band below the eye, as well as a bright blue moustache and band behind the eye that are green in the female. Unmistakable in its range. Song, given at dawn, consists of a single downslurred whistle, “wee-ooo,” repeated every few seconds.

Indigo-banded kingfisher (Ceyx cyanopectus) (external link) by Paolo Dolina (external link), on Flickr

A dazzling little kingfisher of streams with vegetated banks from the lowlands to low elevations in the mountains. Deep indigo-blue above with a pale turquoise band down the back and speckling on the wing and head. Note pale cheek and throat patches and bright orange chest and belly. Males have a blue band across the upper chest, and some have an incomplete band across the lower chest. Races differ. Southern birds have an all-black bill, while northern ones have a red lower bill and more blue on the sides. Similar to Common Kingfisher, but Indigo-banded lacks orange on the cheek and has at least some blue on the sides. Voice is a high-pitched, tinkling trill.

Kevin you've a magnificent collection here and imagine countless more.

Love yours too Dolina. Beautiful colours and details.

Haven't any of our Kingfisher photos, never seen one sadly, but the imported (from Mainland Australia) Laughing Kookaburra ~ Dacelo novaeguineae is common here and considered a pest, displacing other birds.
Their call is awesome though and particularly when one starts that ignites others. Bit like one dog sets the neighbourhood off :-)

Lovely image of your Kookaburra.

Before pandemic I was supposed to visit AU and would have loved to photograph the Kookaburra at my aunt's backyard.

Common Kingfisher, Alcedo atthis (external link) by Paolo Dolina (external link), on Flickr

Beautiful little blue-and-orange bird with a long, pointed bill. Often rather shy and inconspicuous despite bright plumage. Found along rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds—almost any fresh or brackish habitat with small fish. Often perches quietly in trees over water; most often seen in very fast low flight as a turquoise flash over the water, usually flying away. Easily detected once its high, shrill whistled call is learned, even if the bird itself is hidden. The only small blue kingfisher over much of its range.

Collared Kingfisher (Todiramphus chloris) (external link) by Paolo Dolina (external link), on Flickr

A mid-sized kingfisher with a variable plumage pattern; nearly 50 subspecies described worldwide. All of them have a greenish-blue crown, a white spot above the lores, a black mask extending down as a narrow band across the hindneck, and a white collar. Upperparts are greenish-blue, rump brighter blue, with blue wings and tail and white underparts. Female and juvenile slightly duller. Subspecies mainly differ in plumage, with upperparts varying from blue to green to olive-toned, white loral spot sometimes extending as a supercilium, and underparts sometimes buffier. Gives carious vocalizations, but most common call is a “kek-kek-kek-kek.” Frequents mangroves and tidal creeks, though sometimes inhabits other coastal habitats, including coconut plantations in islands.
