TBM at the Reno Air Races. Not racing, but did participate in the opening ceremonies.

Those Penguins certainly had some difficult ways of folding their wings didn't they. But a couple of cracking photos Ken.

That tends to be a Grumman design.

Thanks John. I read that Roy Grumman worked out the angle of the pivot for the wing using a drafting eraser and paper clips. They used it on several carrier based planes starting with the F4F Wildcat. Here's another shot showing the wing joint.

That doesn't surprise me Kewn, but that hinge pin doesn't look very big. Nor does the locking pin, top left centre and lock plate bottom right, but as it didn't fall off it has to be enough

Ta for the close up. It make it quite clear just how it works.

When I was stationed at Changi, Singapore the taxi way for the NASU, Naval Air Support Unit, ran through the pans for our Shackletons. One time when the Penguins, Fleet Air Arm, had flown off their carrier and based in NASU I was going out to one of the Shacks as a flight of 3 Buccaneers was coming into the taxiway doing about 40 mph. At the same time a flight on Fairy Gannets was coming out at about the same speed. Neither gave way and there was only room for one lot!

I stopped and watched and wondered how loud the BANG was going to be? No bang, they just folded their wings up and I swear that there wasn't enough room between the wing stubs for you to walk through if they had been stationary!

I always knew that Penguins were nutters and that just proved it to me. Anyone who takes off from an airfield that then goes somewhere else before you get back and then tries to land on a surface that is bucking up and down and then goes from flying speed to full stop in a few feet is even more mental than someone who leaves a perfectly serviceable aircraft before it lands and the steps are there to walk down! i.e. parachutists.

A trio of pre WWII speedsters at Old Warden
Top is Percival E.2H Mew Gull flown solo in 1939 from Gravesend to Capetown in a record-breaking time of 39 hours 25 minutes.
Middle is the D.H.88 Comet. Winner of the MacRobertson Race (UK to Australia) in 1934.
Bottom is one of only three Miles Hawk Speed Six built. This was built for the 1935 King's Cup air race and I believe the only survivor.
