Most customers probably never looked at their images close enough to really notice it, and those who did (probably highly correlated with the folks who hang out in online photography equipment forums) were happy to do it themselves. I'm used to crop frames, and 500mm is 500mm. In Florida I'm pretty sure I wouldn't need the teleconverter, because birds are often close. But in most other places I would, I think. I was just tending the HD and the archives from Belize. The birds are all so far away, they are tiny in the crop frame.
