The moon and Mars at about 11:30 pm US Eastern time on October 14.

Exposure locally increased on Mars and decreased on the moon in Lightroom.

And here's a portrait of the moon by itself a few minutes later. Taken at 400 mm and heavily cropped.

Decent PP for that crop.

Thanks. I've been trying to do more with NR, encouraged to no small degree by folks on this thread. The moon pic wasn't that bad to begin with, but the severe crop (2660x1774, or 4.7MP) made what noise there was stand out even more. I wanted the maria to look smooth, and I like the way Serenity and Tranquility came out. IMO, the terminator region between 1-3 days past full is the most interesting. I love seeing the many deep craters with terraced edges and big central peaks in high relief, like the one in the middle along the right edge in the image (Theophilus).

(Sorry, started geeking out about the moon a bit there. Some people say I'm a lunatic, but I prefer the term selenophile (external link).)

I've also been doing more in LR with localized adjustments using masks, after watching a really good class about it at the recent Lightroom Virtual Summit. I've been using it with my recent air show pics (which I should have ready to post a couple soon). On the Moon + Mars pic, I'd like to try to bring Mars out a little more. I don't want to overdo it, but it was pretty bright in the sky and I'd like the image to reflect that.

After a wait which seemed like ages - I finally received my R7 about lunch time today. After a bit of fiddling about with it I had just attached the telephoto when this Crow appeared - so I pointed the camera in the general direction - and Voilà here we are. But it will take me quite a bit of practice even to start catching up with everyone else.

A quick question - I am using it in Spot Focus mode - How do I stop the focus dancing about all over the screen and sometimes displaying multiple focus points?

Edit - just an additional comment- the Crow was shot through a double glazed window - and it wasn’t made of photographic quality glass either - and also a protective 77mm filter on the lens. I am almost beginning to like this camera in spite of no GPS, no flash and inferior weather sealing - perhaps the next version, Eh!

Nice first shot!

Regarding settings, I suggest you consider starting with those of Bryan Carnathan. They are a pretty good start. Then modify according to your needs.

Good start.

I suggest you start off with animal eye tracking over the full frame either on shutter or back button and set up fine point AF on a back button as a backup method.

If you want it to stick with the selected point you have to turn off subject tracking. I think most folks are customizing a button to toggle it on/ off. I wanted a simple set-up for my wife to use, so I have have single-point without tracking on the shutter button and full-frame tracking on the AF-ON button.

Thanks guys - I have added an edit to my original post. I thought all the gen would be in the manual - but there is only a few pages in English repeated in 1001 other languages.:-( So I suppose I have to trawl through the downloadable manual. My car came with a downloadable manual and I can control it with an iPad built into the dash.

I have never set-up or used back button focus - I never really needed it when life wasn’t controlled by a microchip.:-) but I will give it a try.-?
Thanks for your suggestions.

I shot using the shutter button only for 5 years with my 7D. I never had trouble keeping the shutter half pressed between burst sequences.

After getting the 7D2 and chatting in threads I decided to use BBF, primarily the AF-ON. I did separate AF from the shutter which you can do in the button programming menus.

ML bodies has changed everything. I did start out using the BBF like the 7D2 but went back to old school. Now I do everything from the shutter button again which actually feels more natural to me. I only use a BBF to "force" my camera to focus on my subject when it is struggles.

I have the AF-ON set to Single Point AF for general use, * set to Zone AF for BIF and the AF point selection button for Spot AF. Spot is my least used option.

I always start out with Face/Eye AF and if the camera is not cooperating I press a BBF, (lets use Single Point as an example) if needed I physically move the camera to ge the AF point "anywhere" on the body of my subject and release the BFF. The eye just snaps into focus.

Here is a good example. A Sony vs Canon shootout with an R3 but it's all the same. Minutes 2:30 to about 6 is enough to get the idea. About minute 3:10 is a great example of him using Expansion AF to hone on his subject (I call it force focus) when the camera gets confused.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGrEWOZYgDw (external link)

I use this method a lot because it is fast and easy. This technology is new and will get better but can be frustrating. It's still just a computer trying to figure out what you want and most of the time it's pretty good. Once you learn it's limitations and take over when it hits a speed bump the shooting experience is a lot more fun.

Setting up alternative AF.

I thought I would put this up for those that might not have used it before as I think it is not that clear in the user manual.

Image order from top-left, then work right before down.

1. Orange Tab 3: Select customise buttons.
2. Select a Button to customise (shows * button)
3. Select metering and AF start.
4. Press INFO button to get details menu, next two images show the same screen with the last image showing the screen scrolled down. This detail is not shown in the UM I think.

The way this works is all the items unticked have the same value as the main setup for AF-Tracking, AF Mode and AF-Area. Ticked items show differences.
So currently I have my default setup for animal tracking with eye detect on full screen, the AF-ON is set to activate this with the shutter set to Meter Start.

The * button is set to an alternative AF mode, Spot AF area with Subject Tracking Off (My understanding is this effectively disables Eye Detection etc also).

The way I used this is to use the AF-ON to eye detect the subjects, on the rare occasions this did not work or did not grab the subject I wanted I use * to grab the subject and then switch back too eye detect.

This seems to work OK but is early days. As previously noted small area AF might be a better back up AF method for BIF but I had no real issues so far with eye detect and BIF.
