Oct 30, 2022 12:01 | #19613 Hi Steve...This is really a great photograph of this little guy. It's also one where breaking the so-called "rules" works (at least for me). That is that the background is busy, but it actually enhances the overall image by highlighting the bird's environment and the splash of yellow and green makes the bird stand out. The pine cones are yet another element that works. “The sound of birds stops the noise in my mind.” - Carly Simon

So, whenever I shoot them (only once a year usually) I try to incorporate pine needles, branches, trunks and cones. The green background is from tall grass along shoreline (the park juts into the Chesapeake Bay). I have a simple shot of a nuthatch on the end of a branch against the sky. I like it but, as you noted, it doesn't highlight the environment nor does it have much context.

The park I visited has an observation deck that primarily is meant to give views of aquatic birds in the surrounding water ways. As it resides in a Pine stand, I climb it to get closer to nuthatches. Cutting down the shooting distance helps a ton.
