You live in a pensioners gated community?

Noooo!!! I wouldn't survive in a gated community. I'm claustrophobic! I'm one block away from a massive retirement village and 3 blocks away from a massive senior care facility. They are buying up houses to expand. They just haven't made it to my street yet. :-)

If they happened to make a rather "generous" offer, I have to admit, I'd have to consider it. Then I could maybe afford a six room home!

My home is over 100 years old and has history. It would truly be hard to let it go. As it goes though, everyone does have their price. Perhaps I could find a 105 year old 6 room home.

A hundred years old isn't as old as it used to be. I mean that's well into the 20th Centurey.

Yeah, my home is 85 years old, and whatever history it has is of no interest to me, because I don't think of the 1930s or 1940s as being interesting at all. . I would gladly have my house bulldozed over so I could build a new one in its place, if I could afford to do so. . It sucks having a place that isn't built with the benefits of modern building codes and modern building materials. . Trying to make any improvements at all is so freaking difficult, because of the existing construction that has to be tied into.

To each his own, I guess. . It's nice that there are people who appreciate early 1900's history, but I am just not one of them.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

My town was established as a railroad town, and still supports the rails as far as yards and storage on the East side, out of sight of the tourists who come to ride the antique train, which is a huge draw, larger than I expected. Between late 1800's and early 20th century, the town needed housing for the railroad workers which was affordable and comfortable. No two houses from that time period are the same. There isn't another house like mine, which makes my house and neighborhood unique. I'm not a huge history buff, however I do have the abstract to my house which dates back to when the land was purchased to build the homes, and lists all the families who lived here. I found it pretty interesting to know the history dating back to the beginning of it. Many of the previous owners are buried in the local cemeteries and can easily be located. I could be a geek, but yeah, I found it pretty interesting knowing the history. My one regret is that there used to be a fireplace in my living room which was removed ages ago. I would love to have that fireplace, but I guess all things considered it would make it a huge fire hazard (?).
Of course the creepy thing is back in the day, if someone died, they were laid out in the house, which can, at times, freak me out with the night noises I often hear, and dismiss as the house simply settling...100 years later :p

Well, it's that time of year. A couple inches of snow are predicted for today and tomorrow, and the kid I hired to move my snow is a now a college student and no longer avaiable, so I need to to find a new kid to shovel for me. *sigh*

I'm lucky in that my snow removal kid is eternal. :) In Dallas we get now maybe twice a year at most but it never hangs around long. the sun comes out and it all goes away in hours or by the next day at the latest. :) I still own a snow shovel that moved with me when I lived in the frozen north. It comes in really handy when leaf raking time comes along.

An old memory here: In fourth grade, all the kids took a nationally standardized test of intelligence or achievement, I don't know which. One question has always stayed with me. It must have been in a section on reading comprehension or reasoning. First there was a story about a little boy who helped clean up snow off the porch or someplace. He used a vacuum cleaner. Later a puddle of water appeared on the closet floor. The test was multiple choice, and we were to choose the option that explained where the water came from. Now, in the middle of the San Joaquin Valley, snow was a novelty. We might see a very light snowfall once in ten years. I knew the answer from reading, but I remember thinking that the question was unfair to children who didn't live in snow country and hadn't learned in another way that snow melts to water. (You also might have to know something about vacuum cleaners. In my home, we just used brooms and mops.)

I still think the question was unfair, for the same reason. Constructing good test questions requires recognizing your own biases.

I lived in San Francisco for 5 years in the 90's (1990's, that is, I'm not that old). My first Christmas there was seriously odd as I had never seen so much green foliage adorned with Christmas lights. Add to that, it was warm. Originally from Michigan, I was in shirtsleeves mostly, however the locals seemed to prefer sweatshirts since temps in the 60's was seriously chilly to my neighbors. My winter coat was a Levi Jacket which was lined with sweatshirt material. On the vacuum cleaners, I don't remember what the make was, maybe Kirby? But it weighed more than a car and was a horrible shade of beige and too heavy for me to handle when I was a kid. That job fell to my older brother who resented me greatly since I'd point out all the places he missed. Ahhh...good times, good times. Snow plow just went past again. Time for more coffee. Apologies for the highly random post.

I love leaf raking! The smell and the crunch of the leaves when walking through them. We used to be able to burn them in a pile in the alleys, but enough people complained that it was irritating their various ailments and now we have to bag the leaves and put them at the curb for the leaf patrol to collect. I mulch them now with my mower to save the time and effort of bagging.

I mulch mine as well. A bit dusty but we have a lot of trees and I would have to fill maybe 100 bags or so.

QUOTED IMAGE

My previous home had a lot of trees and I had to deal with the dust as well. This house has only one tree, but it's huge, and lives in the back yard. My neighbors all have trees which share their leaves with my yard, so most of the mulching I do are not technically my leaves, but strays that found my yard on windy days. Your yard in your pic reminds me of the yard we had in Arkansas. There was a huge stone in the middle of the yard which we made a stone path to, and would have a lot of conversations on that rock in the cool shade of very hot southern days. I miss that yard, and sadly that was before I got serious about photography, so I have no images to share.
