I would live to learn how to do this effect and turn some photos if my kids into posters like this. Us there a program to do this, it a multi step workflow in Photoshop?

Any help in the right direction would be appreciated

I would think different runs of USM and also shadow/highlight filters could produce that effect. Moving those sliders around produce some very interesting results.

Are you talking about the lighting effect or the composite itself?

Some of Joel Grimes old videos on how he made dazzling sports composites years ago should be helpful. He photographed athletes in the studio and composited them against backgrounds he'd shot out in the field. His magic was in how he lighted the athletes. Although he was in a studio, you could do the same thing in a large indoor space (like basketball court) or outdoors in dimmer light (evening or shade).

There's a filter in Photoshop CS5 called Poster Edges. It's not quite the same, but you might find it useful. There are sliders to adjust the effect. I don't know if it exists in CS6 or the online version.

Thanks for the responses. I will try some of what's posted so far.

I want to replicate the effect on the picture. Not even sure what to call it. It looks like it's almost a cartoon or drawing, but it's still a picture.

Try using a High Pass filter set to Soft Light on a separate layer. High Pass is in Filters => Other => High Pass (you can set the strength parameters in the popup). Soft Light is found in the Layers side panel, click the dropdown 'Normal' on the top part and scroll down to 'Soft Light'.

You can duplicate the number of soft light layers to multiply them. Be aware though, that this will leave a 'glow' edge around the subjects but you can just erase to gt rid of that. Keep your original layer intact and you can play with the opacity as well.

I think it's wise to just run through all the filters in photoshop on layers with varying opacities to see how they can be leveraged. I have a couple of recorded actions I made in the past to generate more edgy results, one converts the image into a black and white sketch and one that generates more of a painting/cartoon look. It took a few hours to try things until I finally had a recorded set of actions from which I liked the results.

This is one of them, but again not the look above. You could look at the Nik collection, there are some filters there that might get close like the Monday filter, coupled with a high contrast filter.

I still think the NIK collection might be the best bet. I tried a few filters in my older copy like pro contrast, monday morning, etc to create a pretty edgy look, it still doesn't match the OP however. Much like cooking, one has to try different methods and spices to find out what ultimately tastes great. ;)
