Hopefully this is the right place for this type of image.

Taken in The Loft Studio (Leicester) the other evening - one of several I hope come out as well - just got to find the time to edit them!

I'm not sure which version I prefer the most!

A friend of mine (non-photographer) complained that the colour version was all wrong due to the light being the wrong way, shadows all wrong and the luminosity of background being different to the subject.
Not sure I totally agree with that assessment- anyway being as I’m not at home currently and only have lightroom on my phone I’ve done a different edit (on a different shot as that was on my phone) in black and white which I quite like.

I prefer the colour version - had a think about it and one of the reasons is that in colour the separation between cap & the ornate decorative column in the background is more pronounced whereas the the monotone ones have far less separation. Very cool shot!

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Well I do like that last one, but still prefer the colour.
For a subject like this chap in uniform, colour gives out more details than mono that to me is important (stress the me bit :-) )
His tanned arm looks just that, but in the mono its dark and I could be left wondering why it's like that?

If you hadn't shown the colour I'd probably say how very good it is (mono) Bit silly sounding.
It's one of those photos I doubt I've had said 'can you show a colour version? ' which is often how I feel when viewing some mono
Now I guess that's really helpful. :-P But does say how nice the mono is.

It's really down to what you feel about it or a person you're giving it to.

I'm going with the 1st image like everyone else. Perhaps your friend wasn't aware that he's about to walk out of another doorway into a well lit environment...lol. That would make the directional soft light on him appropriate. :) Personally, I think the image is interesting and well done!
