Thanks ...absolutely right about difficulty getting red tail feathers showing like this guy did ...FYI . When they are eating they tend to have the tail feathers closed and are normally obscured within the tree foliage or by a branch . And when flying they are normally either flying away because they have been spooked by me getting to close to them in the tree or at best side on again obscuring tail feathers. Once in a blue moon though they will get comfortable with me being around ( as long as Im at a reasonable distance which the 600mm helps with) and they then start flying back and forward between trees for food which is exactly what happened in this case giving me a clear shot of its tail feathers

this morning we were sitting in bed at crack of dawn and a butcherbird lobbed on a branch outside when a blackbird decided to fly past.
Bad mistake. I have never seen a bird move so fast. If you think cats are fast then this would probably have beaten one.
The butcherbird was up like a flash and off with its prey, leaving a single feather to fall to the ground.
Amazing experience. No photos though

Today I found two baby wrens hiding in the bushes. There are two males and a female attached to this family so it seems.
Not good photos as they were in amongst the leaves and tiny branches plus depth of field was an issue.

Superb Fairy Wren - mum and two youngsters

we had some excavations happening today and topsoil was piled to the side.
The wrens had a field day with the countless small grubs and insects that were revealed.
Interesting this was about 20 metres from the 2 juniors and the parents pigged out on these and only once did I see one fly across to the young.

It was a blackbird , so not quite the same as a wren or native.
Today there was a Kookaburra on the ground outside the wren family home.
It flew off when I approached.
Hopefully it wasn't eyeing off the wrens

I would have thought that a blackbird is too big for a butcherbird.

Hopefully the kookaburra leaves the wrens alone in peace.

well today was a blast. I was able to get quite close to the Superb Fairy Wrens and they put on a real show.
They really are used to my presence and all ages just sit and gaze about whilst I stand literally in front and about 10-12 feet away.
Dad and one of the juniors (other is also there at left). Latter has appearance of a female but at that age not sure if eye lore colour is the give-away?

Lyn we both saw the event but it went so quick I wouldn't lay bets on what it was.
Both of us thought there was a bird down in the grass that had been knocked off course by the Butcherbird but when I got outside only the feather was there and my wife hadn't seen anything leave the scene.
Maybe it did survive and it too flew off but minus a tail feather (about 100mm long) ?

It's just too easy. Walk up to them, talk nicely and they put on their nicest behaviour
