That's an interesting bridge, and a nice image. From that angle, it seems the stays don't do anything to support the bridge. The link doesn't enlighten me either since the images there don't show the whole bridge.

From what I can see, it looks like the cables support the deck which crosses a narrow valley. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get an image of the entire structure.

Bridges fascinate me. The engineering & design that goes into them, all the calculations for loadings etc, & they look damn good as well. Restored rail bridge.

Agree on all of those sentiments.
Timber bridges were, are a work of art.
I was privileged to grow up in my work environment with the government road building organisation that included bridge building.

I loved seeing the craftsmanship that went into them.
The squaring of the beams with just an adze and a squaring axe, the long hand augers for the massive bolts, latter made by our blacksmith, later machinists.
One of my jobs was to seek out suitable trees for bridges when surveying in the bush.

I still remember setting out what was probably the last timber bridge in Tasmania. The end of an era . Sadly it washed away in 2016 floods.

When I built my first house I had cathedral ceiling with 10X3" beams supported on a 15X4" beam.
The design was for ¾" bolts holding the lot together.
I asked the bridge foreman could he drill the holes through them, including the 15X4 beam.
He stood it on edge, perched himself on top and just augered down coming out exactly square and in middle of the underside. Mind blowing accuracy, all by hand.

That's a lovely example Speedync.

That would have been a great job avondale. Just about perfect. In the great outdoors, wandering around the bush, doing a bit of survey work, fabulous. I'm actually a bit jealous :)
