it depicts the life of Norman Sykes - A conservationist who left fifteen hectares of bushland to the young people of Railton.

Scholar, musician, World War One fighter pilot and qualified engineer, Norman Sykes was one of Railton’s most colourful residents and one of Tasmania’s most eccentric conservationists. His dream was to live as close to nature as possible and he gave up all the comforts of a city life to do so.

He was resolutely independent, getting around either on foot or by bicycle and left civilisation to live in a small shack on 40 acres of bushland in Railton. He donated his property to the community with the instruction that it be turned into a sanctuary for birds and other fauna.

and the finished mural posted previously, above

What a great backstory Avon - thanks for sharing. It's always fascinating to hear the origin story of artwork and the people who created it. I'm looking at those concrete pads and the overhang...are those designed as possible picnic areas, although the table is missing.

Thanks Stuart. I imagine all art has a storey to it and I enjoy the storey as much as the representation.

Those pads and roof structures are permanent, specifically for supporting the mural boards.
These murals stay in place for a year then taken down and sold.
And it starts all over again.

There are a few seats dotted about the little park the murals are arranged in
Picnic tables, just one

I'll post more as days go on.

I don’t think so. It is very dry there, near Anza Borrego Desert State Park. I can see why you asked the question.
