I saw this striking bird strolling across a grassed area at the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens in Brisbane this (very hot) morning.:-)

It was a tough session, trying not to blow the whites in the intense sunlight. I couldn't see where he/she flew to with the nest building material.

The Royal Spoonbill also known as the black-billed spoonbill, occurs in intertidal flats and shallows of fresh and saltwater wetlands in Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands.

Cheers

Dennis

Clipper this too is very nice indeed.
Beautiful colours and detail.
Have you managed to capture one in flight? That would be showy with the colours and markings it has[/QUOTE]

Been trying to get both Rainbow and Red Collard lorikeets for over 10 years now and still not one sharp enough to post!! :) :)

Cheers

Pippan that's an interesting photo.
How big is the bird? I tried to find out.
I gather the leaves are large, huge even :-)

I've just been reading that the females can be up to 60% heavier than the males.

Comb-crested Jacanas (external link) are small birds, about 20 cm long and the leaves are big. They are lotus lilies (Nelumbo nucifera (external link)) and their leaves can be up to 80 cm or so in diameter. They're becoming a real problem at Fogg Dam, taking over the wetland and leaving little open water for the birds that like open water. Parks has a machine to clear it but it's been broken down for months. As BofBC said, female jacanas are larger, though I didn't realise there was that much difference. Must be lifestyle--all she does is mate (with several males) and lay eggs. :p The males do all the nest building, incubation and caring for the babies.

Definitely a striking bird! Nice job.

This Sulphur-crested Cockatoo was feeding high up in the canopy and then took flight and I managed to grab a couple of frames. Tough shots as these birds are quick and erratic, no easy straight and level flight.:-)

Beautiful captures!

I think it's sharp enough. It shows his size compared to the lotus. Good shot!

Thanks sogs, it took a bit of massaging in Topaz and Ps to get it that sharp.

today I decided to brush-cut the grass down side of drive where the wrens have set up home.
No sign of them so plowed in and left.
I imagined that would be it as far as birds go but wasn't long and they were out in force, and much to my delight the 2 juniors who I hadn't seen for a day or so.
It was absolutely amazing.

Both juniors were sitting on the fence snuggled up then one flew off to the heap of new dirt nearby.
I crept up to the remaining one and was about 5', 1.5 metres from it as it stared about and at me at length.
Meanwhile 2 males and a female, dad and mum and hanger on, were also flitting about
I was gob smacked as I stood there in full view only metres from the adults and so close to junior. I'm sure I missed much of the action as I don't have 270 degree vision
Anway - here's a couple of the juniors
(Trust I don't do the wrens to death here and we wear out our welcome! Yesterday a male plucked a red flower petal and flew off. I'll post that later)

I was pretty impressed with the lens. The full res image certainly cranks out the detail

Interesting shot, Pippan. I was going to ask all the questions about size and perspective that the others have asked. :p
