I'm not sure about the look in the eye, except that they often squint or close their eye(s) while preening their feathers. I think I caught this guy just as he was about to close it.

a group of these lobbed up at lunch time and muttered away outside the house.
I wandered out and grabbed a few photos before they eventually flew off.
This is right outside our house about 10 metres from it

They are a decent size. 55-65 cm, 22-26".
